My Permit Bull, 602, 607 and 612 With Pictures
« on: September 21, 2010, 11:42:56 AM »
I’ve Bow hunted elk for over 20 yrs. Called in some big bulls, the ones I didn’t need a permit for I had no shot and the one’s I could have killed including a 7x7 up in the bumping I couldn’t draw a tag for. I lost all my points 6 years ago to a muzzleloader cow tag, ended up getting a spike that year. I’ve killed two bull calves and one cow w/a bow. I moved to the wet side 5 ½ yrs ago and haven’t picked up my bow for elk over here for various reasons. So, I’ve only put in for tags that gave the best chance of putting an elk in the freezer. So, I drew the one tag for 602, 607 and 612, 3 point min, w/6 points. It would have been nice if it was one unit. I started not knowing the area at all to spending 30 to 50 dollars a trip in gas out scouting to learn the area’s. I would like to thank all the members from this site who helped me w/info.
I left late Saturday and drove 19 miles off 101 up in the hills to spend the night and call to hear bugles, it was raining hard and about a mile from the end of the road I got a flat tire. So that’s where I spent the night. I did some calling but it was raining so hard you couldn’t hear them at all. At 2 am the rain slowed down and I made a bugle, I heard some cows but no bulls. The next morning I drove into Forks and found a place open to fix my tire. It had a large gash in it and the guy said it might last long so that tire became my spare. My buddy and co-worker Logan met me in the morning up at a gate that I spent the night at, again rained all night. We were in the Dickey unit. He was the only one who was going to hunt w/me, I had him for two days. He’s help friends get elk out whole, he’s never seen an elk boned out, never been in on a kill or has never seen one called in. I really wanted to share my kill w/him. We biked in and I did some calling, (bugles and cow calls) no answers. We got in about a mile and cut fresh sign, I bugled some more w/no answer. We stopped and were looking at the GPS when a bull bugled about 200 yds away. It was one of those where are you bugles. We dropped the bikes and made our way down wind and set up. I started w/cow calls, regular and hyper cow calls. No answer. I let out a little bugle and he bugled back. Logan was jacked. I told Logan I think he wants to play. After some more cow calls and no answer I told Logan I was going to try and fire him up. I use a diaphragm and grunt tub. I let out a short growl and grunts. He chuckled right back and we could hear him racking a tree. I gave him one more set of chuckles and waited. No answer. I heard something out front and to our right, He was trying to get down wind of us so we moved down the road to keep down wind. I turned around to look back and saw my bull right in front of the spot we were calling from. He was facing us, Logan was about to S#!T he was saying shoot him he’s a nice bull, I was counting points to make sure it was a legal bull and he was. I really wanted to share this w/Logan and needed the meat so I took him. First branch antlered elk, first elk w/my hand loads. 160 gr nosler accubond. Went in between the L/shoulder and neck and came out behind the r/shoulder.  He went about 20 to 30 yds and down he went. His lungs were mush  and not much blood shot meat at all. My bike cart came in real handy for the trip out to the truck about 2 miles. All in all it was a great time with a good friend.

What did the pivot arm used to connect the game cart to the bike come from?

I had one of those kids bike that hooks to the seat post, used the arm and a ball joint on the end.
