Can You legally bait on a res in WA?
« on: September 22, 2010, 05:28:28 PM »
I found this craigslist posting offering bear hunts on the Quinault Res at the coast over bait. Just thought it was interesting. Not trying to cause an uproar or anything about tribes and all that stuff. Just was curious. http://portland.craigslist.org/clk/spo/1963277046.html

yes they can bait on the reservation. the quinalts have been doing these guided hunts for a long time. the reservation is a soverign nation. i also know that on the Colville reservation tribe members can run cougars with hounds. it is their land and they make all the rules.

Right on. I just wasn't sure. The ad sounded pretty legit, but i was still curious. The two bears in the picture are monsters!

Yes they can, and even non tribal members can hunt it, all done under the gise of "forestry" managment, to help prevent damage to the trees that are so much of there "income", claimed that the bears were damaging up to 1 mil in forrest products every year and they needed to do something to control it, and make a buck off it at the same time..

They do have some dam big bears though....
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

Tribal members can bait anywhere not just on the res.
I talked with a tribal member friend about this topic today.

 :yeah:

Most of us know that tribal members don't have to follow WDFW rules, well that also includes baiting bear and hound hunting for cougar. It doesn't matter if it's on the rez or not. The Muckleshoots do a lot of hound hunting for cougar in the upper White River/Greenwater area which is not on their reservation.

However in order for a non tribal member to legally hunt a baited bear you would have to be on the rez with the proper hunting licenes and "guides"

Hmm.... I never thought of that before, so the indians can hunt cougars with hounds. What we need is for a lot of the people who own hounds, to take some indians hunting, on a regular basis. Let's get the cougar population knocked down.   :IBCOOL:

Usually the words "legally" and "tribe" do not belong in the same sentance.

Ted hunts on the QIN with John Bryson or "Tator". One of the better guides on the res. He also has some seriously impresive Elk mounts in his house.
