Geese reg's question
« on: September 23, 2010, 11:58:15 AM »
I'm excited for this year's waterfowl season, I'm totally hooked after getting a taste of it last year. I've got all my licenses, but I have a quick question about the regs.

I see there is a "Canada Geese" season and a "Geese" season in the regs. The two seasons don't overlap, but I don't see anything that says you can't hunt canadian geese durring the general geese season. I need a little help interpreting please.

Are we allowed to hunt Canada Geese durring the general geese season?

Thanks!

There's white and darks.  The Canda Falls under the 7 sub species of dark Candian Geese.  Brant falls under a sea goose.  Snow's, Ross and Blue Geese fall under light "white" geese.  You will want to figure out which goose management area you would like to hunt in as there are verying restrictions.  The most restricted would be SW Washington, due to duskies and bag limits on them, one per season along with restrictions on cacklers and Aleutians.  If you know which goose management area you are in, I can help you out.  It can be pretty wordy for new guys.  If you don't read through them you may miss the week closures or splits they have.

Thanks! I've read through the regs a few time already, I'm sure I'll be reading them almost daily when it gets closer to duck season... I didn't try for any geese last year because I had trouble figuring out what was what, but I'd really like to get at least one this year.

I will be hunting mostly in Whatcom county which I believe is management area 3. Any help interpreting the regs further would be much apperciated.

Now for the real story :P

The "Canada goose" season is for the early resident goose hunt in Sept and only Canada geese may be taken.
It is called the "canada goose" season since specks are also considered a dark goose and they are not open to harvest until the "General season" starting in October.

In the "General goose" season in Oct all canada, spec and snows may be taken but some subspecies of canadas are protected in some goose mgmt areas.

In area 3..................if it flys, it dies.
Daily limit = 4 geese  / possession limit = 8 geese
Lord forgive me for I shoot hens

Your pretty much are good to go in Area 3  Oct. 16-20 & Oct. 23 - Jan.30th.  You may get into a few specs in the early season and a snow from time to time, but for the most part you are shooting the big guys.  Have at it.
