Tactical Light for AR-15 Home Defense (Off Topic)
« on: September 25, 2010, 10:30:43 PM »
So it turns out the misses will do just fine with the AR for home defense. Since I don't have to buy a new gun this frees up some money for tools, tricks, and wigits.

Anybody have experience with this Crimson Trace product?  It combines a foregrip, light, and a laser at a price that Surefire usually only includes a light.  Its noteworthy that the product only carries a three year warranty instead of Surefire's lifetime warranty.

The other big product I'm looking for is a sight for the top of the gun. The rifle is a S&W MP-15T so its got Picatinny rails just about everywhere you could ask for.  There are also flip up iron sights.  I have used EO Tech's a lot and I do like how they work. However, I would like something that doesn't have a button that needs to be pushed on.  Maybe some kind of tritium sight that is designed to be used with both eyes open? Remember we're talking home defense (shooting a person at 10 yards or less) not a coyote gun for 300 yards.

I found this Trijicon product that seems to meet my criteria, but I haven't seen one in person yet.

Any comments welcome. Thanks.

Hello there,

The SureFire M95 coupled with a LaRue Tactical LT-170 QD mount is absolutely bombproof and more than you'll need for home defense lighting.  $ 421.00.   Just run the pressure pad to a regular foregrip and you're good to go.

Not a fan of the foregrip/light combos thus far... they seem a bit unwieldy and bulky.  The Crimson Trace setup is actually very wide, which at least in my hands made the front end feel a bit... off.

A great sight that can co-witness with your irons is an Aimpoint Micro H-1.  Get the optic and a "tall mount" (LT660) mount from LaRue Tactical for the co-witness.  You can leave the battery on at all times at the lowest setting and have something like 20,000 battery hours from it.  If you want to leave the battery off to power up you turn a big ol' knob on the side of the optic... so easy my 9 year old can flip it on and be good to go in seconds.  Around $ 600.00.

Just my two cents... holler if I can be of any help.  Certified armorer for ARs so if you have any tech questions I'd be happy to help.

Stay safe,

If you're looking for the best Tactical light for any weapon Surefire is the name to beat. I own a few Surefire lights on some pistols and AR-15's and they are pretty hard to beat. I would recommend the Surefire Scout Light for a AR-15 it's pretty small and lightweight. All Surefire products are a little spendy but you get the highest quality weapon light available.

if you want some thing on the other end of the spectrum like Redneck Engineering... Go to Costco buy the 2 pack of HID  Tactical flash lights. buy a 1" scope ring and mount it to the accessory rail. the push button on the back of the flashlight is accessible and you can use cheep scope rings... for the flashlight and rings should be less than $40 and you can do 2 guns.... BTW the lights are bright as hell!  I have bought 3 packs of flash lights. one for me and one for my cousin and Bro inlaw.
