Cougar, Wolf, and Elk from Idaho
« on: September 26, 2010, 09:32:21 PM »
We went on a three week elk hunt in Idaho this year and thought we might bring a couple trail cams along, it was a good idea! :IBCOOL:  The wolves were terrible, i never thought we would actually see one but boy was i wrong.  I saw 8 total on three different encounters and all of them were up close in big timber.  Thats not to mention all the ones we heard howling down in the canyons we were hunting. >:(    We did have quite a few close calls and fill one tag(pics of it on elk forum).  The trail cam pics we got were pretty cool too!
Vegetarians are cool.  All I eat are vegetarians.... except for the occasional mountain lion steak!

Were you in the Dworshak unit?  From what I have heard it has been one of the hardest hit from wolves.  We hunt in 8 and 8A and some friends spotted a couple last year.

we were in unit 10 north east of the dworshak reservoir a couple hours.  Its pretty friggin remote, we took our camp in 7.5 miles on our quads and were hunting several more miles from any roads.  Im not joking when i say we literally had to search for places without any wolf sign.  The access to motorcycles made us mobile enough to find elk that weren't bothered by wolves saving our hunt.  We still had enough elk to occupy our time but there were many miles in between them.  The local guy I was hunting with was disgusted by the decline of elk in his hunting spot, but me being new to the area and used to chasing rosies around in what feels like a zoo of hunters around my home, i still was on cloud nine.
