New release sites in Skagit?
« on: September 29, 2010, 10:48:36 AM »
There was a rumor a while back that DFW was geting access to some private lands for Pheasant release.  It was supposed to be somewhere around Sedro as I recall but there's nothing in the regs or their website about it.  Anybody know anything?

Call or go to the game dept., they'll let you know.

Well, I called them up and those two new sites in Skagit aren't going to happen after all  :(

But they said there will be releases at the new Ebey Island site and they're working on a news release to explain it all.

If they want more participation for the pheasant release program they really do do need to find more areas to open in the north snohomish area.
It's no wonder release sites get so crowded and chaotic when there is only one or two in each county hundreds of miles apart. It could be an enjoyable way to hunt pheasants, train your dog, introduce the youth if the sites didn't get so crowded. But I suppose it is hard to find the right properties in Snohomish county suitable for release sites anymore with the growing populace and all.

I talked to the WDFW Manager for the Snoqualmie sites today and he also confirmed a new release site on Ebey Island. I hope they get some info out about it soon ;)

The bad news is that the corn on the Crescent lake and Chery Valley sites will not be harvested for another two + weeks. That makes Crescent Lake almost impossible to hunt, except for the one barley field.

Cheers!

From the WDFW website...

"This unit is located upstream of Spencer Island and between the towns of Everett and Snohomish. It is 1,237 acres in size and consists of approximately 417 acres of forested swamp, and 820 acres of grassland that was purchased in 2008. The forested portion was logged in the 1890’s and has become reforested naturally into one of the few remaining sitka spruce swamps in the Snohomish River estuary."

Crazy part is dfw had a guy working pretty much full time since early spring to find a couple locations on private ground. All that time and money and nothing to show for it. They should have sent him to cherry valley with a weedeater instead for four months. Oh, he's probably a bio though, can't get dirty.
