remington 40x, 260 rem ??
« on: March 25, 2008, 09:29:33 PM »
hey guys, i was wondering what you think of the 260 rem as a benchrest cal, ive ran across a remington 40x, its the single shot version, with the 20 oz trigger, it is in a mcmillan stock. its in great shape, the guy is asking $1000 for it. im sure it is worth it, but im a little leary of the .260 remington. also, do any of you guys know anything about the 6mm/284, or the 6.5/284 ?

the 260 rem is way underated. it excels for deer and speed goats.. the sixes have awesome S-D, and penetrate like a mug.. dont let the ballistic charts fool you.. as for a 40x rifle,, ive never examined one, so someone else can say something about that

Depends on what you want it for. If its for benchrest the 6 and 6.5 are more common but the .260 will work fine on a local level. The 40x sounds like a good deal. Tough rifles to beat. If you buy it post a pic.  :chuckle:

I really like the 260 as a hunting cal.  Not sure about it as a BR gun.

I can't speak for BR, is that what you intend to use it for?
Are you competing or just punching paper for fun?
In general, cartridges based on the 308 win are pretty (extremely?) accurate.
As a competitor looking for the utmost accuracy, there may be better and I've never reloaded for that caliber, so I can't speak for the bullet selection.
Try accuratereloading.com.
Lots of info in their forums.
I would want to know why they're selling?
I don't know that Remington is the most consistent manufacturer of out-of-the-box rifles...most need some tweaking.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.

im planning on competing with it. i use to shoot a lot of hipower, smallbore, ppc, and some benchrest.but, moving up here kinda put a stop to it.i enjoy punching holes in paper as well. the 40x is pretty much a rem 700 action that was built with very tight tolerinces, and true from the start of production to the end. it comes out of remingtons custom shop. this modle is $3600 new from remington, but you can find used ones cheeper, in the $1500 range. as for the .260, the best i can figure it is a .308 necked down to 6mm? . i think im gona grab it, maybe sell off a rifle or 2 to help pay for it. i have a savage .223 in a choate stock, with a 18x burris that i dont use, a ruger 338 win mag with a 3x9 leupold, and a kimber stanless 2 that can go, and a springfield m1a loaded. the 22ppc, and 6mm ppc are about the most accurate cals out there for benchrest. the 6.5/284 is king of long rance matches, it rules the 1000 firing line. but those cals are wildecats, and take a bit of work to get set up to reload them. so i think a good factory round like the .260 has some some advantages for reloading. thanks for the help guys.

Not a .308 necked down to 6mm but to 6.5mm.

Since you have performed some bench shooting, you should know to ask how many rounds are down the tube now, and you should have the chamber checked out by a benchy smith.

If you are wanting to be competitive in the sport, you will need a gun with absolute tolerences, and fairly new.

The 6.5-284 is only good for about 1200 round in the benchrest arena, the .260 Remington about twice that. They are fast cartriges, and erode barrels.

Both are designed for longer ranges, for stuff under 200 yards you'd be better to pick on the ppc or others of that shape.

If you'd still like to stay competitive, maybe you might want to think about F-Class shooting, or some of the Tactical Matches that are running around this State.
Big one in Wenatche this coming weekend. Longest shot should be just under 2000 yards...be a challenge for sure.

Otherwise, I'd say the .260 is a damn fine cartrige, and the Remington 40X a damn fine gun.

thanks much littletoes. yea, im kind of curious about the matches up here. i know the rattlesnake rang up around tri cities has some good matches. i havent shot there tho. most of the shooting i did was on the local level, but i have shot at camp perry quite a bit as well. right now im looking for a palma rifle, in 6.5/284, or 6xc. the 40x just kind of poped up, and is hard to pass up.

If your interested in shoots with a differant "flavor", that involves some long range stuff check these boys out..most shoots are local.

Any solid bottom 40X in a McMillan,is a bargain at $1K.
