AK 47 Question
« on: September 29, 2010, 08:12:00 PM »
I know absolutly nothing about them but I have been thinking about getting one. Cabelas has a very good deal on one.  It is a dragunov single stack.  I believe it is a Romanian AK but not sure.  Are they of good quality and reliable? Can someone also explain the single stack?  I know a lot about bolt guns and ar's but nothing about ak's.  Thanks guys.

I'm assuming they mean a single stack magazine, check here for more options. http://www.classicarms.us/

FWIW I have dealt with these guys and they are alright.

The single stack AK's have mags that only hold 10 rounds.  Otherwise they are just like any of the others.  AK's are very reliable, will shoot anything you feed them.

Will this particular rifle accept a different magazine?  I don't want one that will only take a 10 round mag.

Not if it is like the romanian single stack AK I had.  The reciever won't accept the standard 30 round mags.

I think those are the commiefornia legal version, 10 round max for removable magazine.

@rob, enjoy.

A Dragunov is not a AK47,

The Dragunov is a semi-automatic gas-operated rifle with a short-stroke gas-piston system. The barrel breech is locked through a rotating bolt (left rotation) and uses three locking lugs to engage corresponding locking recesses in the barrel extension. The rifle has a manual, two-position gas regulator.

After discharging the last cartridge from the magazine, the bolt carrier and bolt are held back on a bolt catch that is released by pulling the cocking handle to the rear. The rifle has a hammer-type striking mechanism and a manual lever safety selector. The rifle's receiver is machined to provide additional accuracy and torsional strength. The Dragunov's receiver bears a number of similarities to the AK action, such as the large dust cover, iron sights and lever safety selector, but these similarities are primarily cosmetic in nature.

Dragunovs are precision sniper rifles not squad automatic rifles like the AK

 :yeah:
They also use the old 7.62x54mmR round from 1891 and not the 7.62X39 that the SKS and AKs use.

dragunov is only the stock style, and hell no the AK isnt very accurate. I have shot pretty good with them though. In the middle east the hodgies couldn't hit *censored* with them. You may be able to find a banana for it though.

Try looking at the WASR Hi-cap AK47 from Century Arms, Romanian I believe.  Another one to look at is the VZ58, Czechoslovakia.  The major different between the two is the WASR is a stamped receiver, while the VZ58 is a forged.  There's less flex with the VZ58, and from what I've read better groupings.  Both are 7.62x39.

There was a guy that had one at the range one day. The best groups he could get out of it were about 4" @ 100yds, with a scope.  I almost felt like I was showing off putting 5 rounds almost touching though the center. :chuckle:
