I can only see my feet

I've been taking my son out walking around in the woods lately and have noticed he is always looking down at the ground.  So far nothing I have said is working to get him to spend more time looking around.  Any suggestions on how to get the point into his head?

You probably told him to quit making so much noise as he walks.... 

Yeah, with kids you got to keep reminding them to look way out ahead to see animals, not at the ground... Make a game out of it, see who can spot the next deer....(let him win a few...)

I remember my Dad hounding me about this when I was younger.
He will get over it.  He is probably just not sure footed yet and is worried about how he is stepping down.

  that is the same way it was with me as well. i learned to start looking for animals instead of rocks to trip over. even though some times its good to look what you are stepin on SNAKE!!!!

Your likely going too fast, I always have to make my kids slow way down and when they do their heads pop right up and start scanning the area !! He will get the hang of it, he is trying really hard to impress you by not stopming and shuffling his feet so give him a pat on the back for that !!

+1 on maybe walking too fast for him, my nephew did the same thing when i first started taking him out and about couldnt figure it out till one day it clicked, ah hes got short legs. slowed down and up came the eyes now i cant get him to check his step, if he can trip over it he will now i guess finding that moose in the canyon behind dads place is worth tripping a few times

My son is 11.

I remember one time when I was younger my old man sent me on a walk down below him.  I have no idea how far I went or how long I was gone but I never left his sight.  When I got back he asked my how many deer I had seen on my trip.  My answer was a simple "none".  He said he had seen two while I was out.  I proceeded to ask him where they were and he told me they had crossed the trail behind me.  Since then I walk through the woods acting like someone is following me and continually look behind me.

game I play with myself (in my head) as I'm walking I focus on something (sorta a "hey what's that dark spot"), trying to teach myself to take in the distant while not hurting myself.

been there done that . i have been this way forever when i was in Jr high and high schools i was in to track and Field and as a sprinter this is some thing you don't want to do,  but i didn't listen to  my coaches they used to get so pissed  i could hear them when i was running gdm it  Kevin look up i would watch my feet and every few yards i would look up. so my last year of track i decided to run with my head up and had nothing but injures the hole season . i wish i hadn't listen to them because it made it no fun for my any more . so what ever you do just make sure he is still having fun with you. and on the good side i find a lot of stuff this way to weeks ago i found a gold wedding ring and i all ways find money

That was my first thought. Your going to fast. Slow down and his head will start looking around more
