What is your question? Use them for what?
Some people spend their entire life wondering if they made a difference. Marines don't have that problem.

Yes you can use them, and mounted scopes too. Shotguns are just considered a modern firearm.

For Big Game the one restriction they have is on caliber/guage. A 10 and 12 guage can be used for anything in the state. BUT, a 16 and 20 guage can be used for only Deer, Bear, and Cougar. If hunting Elk you must use a 10 or 12 ga. For all calibers you can use either slugs or #1 and larger buckshot. You can use either a rifled barrel or a smooth bore, no restriction on that part.

For small game, there aren't restrictions on caliber/gauge or size of shot. There might be on Turkey, but I am not a turkey hunter so I dont know. For example you can use T shot in a 20 guage for coyote's if you want.

ok thanks and i dont get that. they build .410 that can take down a bear and are accurate out to 200 yards. they are pretty much a rifle with a lighterweight bullet and a 3 1/2 inch or 4 inch shell with a rifled barrel

I must say the regs are quite clear.  Your question is certainly not.

Shotguns:
Deer, bear, and cougar may be hunted with 20
gauge to 10 gauge shotguns shooting slugs or #1
or larger buckshot. Other big game may be hunted
with a 10 or 12 gauge shotgun using slugs. Hunters
must use #4 shot or smaller (e.g. #6 shot is legal) to
hunt turkey.

Since scopes are not addressed, they are legal.

The regs are not confusing you just have to read them. Why even debate the .410 thing thats just plain silly. It's illegal here in WA anyways. Sit down read the regs and they'll tell you everything you need to know.

By the way, your buddy is copletely full of  :crap: about this myterious .410 that'll kill bears at 200 yards. Hell I can barely kill a grouse with mine at 25 yards.

I think "rock" meant for the title of this thread to be "rifled shotguns," not "rifles shotguns." If that's the case, the post is slightly less confusing. Either way, it looks like the question has been answered.

There may be some 410 slug loads that have sufficient energy to kill a deer at 200 yards.  I've never heard of one.  However, you would also need an exceptionally accurate shotgun to take advantage of it. The great majority of rifled shotguns in any gauge do not have the accuracy to take ethical 200 yard shots.   I would guess that 9 rifled shotguns out of town cannot consistently do much better than 4" groups at 100 yards.  That turns into 8" to 10" or worse at 200 yards.  Slugs have very low ballistic coefficients and suffer severe wind drift.

If you're going to buy a shotgun to shoot 200 yards, you'd be much better off buying a high quality 20 or 12 gauge since (a) they are legal in Washington, and (b) there are many more ammunition choices available.

Good article Bob33. Legality aside, I am still struggling with why you would hunt with a .410 when you could use a 12, 16, or 20 ga (I would lean to 12ga). To me, it is like using a 243 for Elk. I am sure it could be done, and I know it has been done, but is it ethical and is it the best cartridge/caliber for the game?

I never like to blow someone out of the water just because I think they are full of BS, that's why I asked for a link.  Bob33's link to 410 slugs peaked my intrest as Ohio alows 410 slugs for deer in non rifle zones.  That means someone is going to try and push the envelope, and they did.  You buddy was right.

.410 was legal for deer in Washington when I was a teenager.

Looking at the link for more modern .410 slug loads, note that the trajectory for 200yds with a 100yd zero is 28-35 inches of drop.

Its one thing to implement some Kentucky windage.. Its another to range your target and dial in some scope dope for long range shooting, but to fire a mortor at that distance is absurd. The energy deliverd at that distance is on par with a 30-30.

Rock, there's been some confusion resulting from your post. I suggest that you proof-read what you've typed before you hit the 'Post' button.  (not to say that I don't make a typo once in a while, but that original title was a bit perplexing.  -You can change that, ya know.)

So yes, rifled shottie barrels larger than .410ga are legal for big game in Washington. Scopes too.

I have seen rifled shotguns 12 gauge, with scope that shoot 2 inch 100 yard groups consistently. That is bad azz.
