Bull Moose Fight
« on: September 30, 2010, 07:29:30 PM »
Last Saturday I went to check some cameras and as I came around the corner in the road I noticed it looked like a herd of cattle had been through there.  As I drove through the torn up road I noticed that I could not make out a track, mostly just skid-marks.  I pulled up past the torn-up spot and got out and went to see what all the destruction was from.  The first thing I notice is a piece of antler laying directly in the middle of the road, I had driven right over the top of it  :bash:.  Back to the truck I go to get the camera and started shooting.  I found lots of black hair and lots of blood.  They tore up the whole road for about 60 feet and then went down a steep embankment leaving blood and thrashed trees as they went.  I thought I was going to find the one that was loosing all the blood, but no such luck.  At first I thought it was an elk brow tine, but with more assessment of the tracks (few and far between) and the hair, I concluded it was moose.  As for all you lucky tag holders, they apparently are getting after fierce enough to break antlers and draw blood.  Hopefully the broken tine bull shows up on one of my cams :).  Good luck tag holders and if you need a little help in 117 let me know, I may have some tips.  Enjoy the pics!!

I tracked them down the bank, then one lined out and parralled the road for a while at a fast pace, but that was not the one bleeding.  It looked as if the bleeder was the winner, as he stood up on the road overlooking the bank, loosing blood.  I may have to go look for ravens this weekend  :o

Cool post, I don't know if it would be a good Idea to mess around with a bull moose that's in the mood to fight. Last weekend in Idaho my dads buddy and his mule were attacked by a bull moose. He tried to scare it off but it came back and attacked his mule. then he shot and killed it but it was to late. He is OK, his mule died and he walked the nine miles out to his rig. Poor guy is devastated at the lose of his favorite mule but is lucky to be alive.       Be carefull out there!!!!!!       Also I heard that more people die every year in Alaska from moose attacks than from grizzly, don't know if this is true but something to consider. :o

My 49 moose had his left eye poked out from a fight years ago.

Last year on my moose hunt in 49 we came across something like that 2. We walked by it on a gated road and were on our way out and noticed a huge blood trail in front of us. we followed it about five hundred yards before he went over the hill and down through a clear cut. We thought it was a raffle tag holder that shot it with archery equipment because we came across the blood trail opening day and raffle holders get to start earlier. But after seeing these pictures a fight would make more sense. The bull we trailed had to of died it was a steady stream of blood and he bedded once at the spot he went over the edge and through the clearcut, there was a puddle of blood probably 2 foot in diameter he was definitely hurting and I don't think he would have made it.
