Cat Hunting
« on: October 01, 2010, 07:49:19 PM »
I have a desire to go try to shoot a cougar this winter!  Never hunted for them, never even seen one (been stalked by one, never saw it, just the tracks).

I would/could easily hunt the coastal or south cascades areas.

I have read other people's posts and threads about it and it sounds like:

1.  I need snow.
2.  I need to call.

I would be going with a partner, and I was just wondering if anyone had any basic pointers about a novice going out and trying it (especially from the calling regards!)

Thanks!!!

There are several posts in this section about calling cats.  Most are from last winter.  The biggest thing is to be able to stay as motionless as possible while calling and to call for an hour or more.  Cats are very cautious when they come in.  On two occasions, I have found tracks where a cougar came in to my calling and then sat down for a bit....I never say him and found the fresh tracks when I left the area.  I think they most likely saw me move as it was cold...like 10 above.  Good Luck...it is exciting  !!
It never changes, but it is always different.
