Deer or Bear Down....now what?
« on: October 01, 2010, 08:29:47 PM »
Okay, so I am a newbie to the big game hunting arena.  I have been big game hunting with my father years ago, but he took care of everything.  Now it is my turn and I am looking for some help.  I do have some experience bird hunting and fishing, but nothing as big as a bear or deer.

So lets say I shoot a deer or bear and need to gut it.  Is there a book, website or past post that would be good for me to look at to get an idea, with pictures, of how this is done.  I have read some stuff on line and in here, but I am a picture fella.  I can't imagine that it is to difficult to gut a big game animal, but I want to ensure I do it right and don't ruin the meat.

Then where the hell do you take the animal.  I will be hunting in GMU 204.  We have some property near Lyman lake road in the Aeneas Valley.

Any and all information/tips is greatly appreciated.  I want to tap into the experience of this group.

Thanks

Oh, goodness...I forgot about that one.  Really funny...

Watch a couple of videos on HOW to gut a deer and don't worry too much.  It's dead - you're not going to hurt it.  Just take it easy when you make your cut along the stomach so you don't poke the guts, just suck it up and don't be grossed out when you cut around the bunghole and nuts.  Be especially if you don't cut through the brisket (and if you're dragging it you might not want to cut through it - that's just my opinion - other people have their way of doing it and they all work) and you reach up to cut the trachea.  Easy place to cut yourself if you're not careful.

And don't forget the liver and heart.

Kain, thanks for posting that, I always get a good laugh out of that one....

Quimby, a deer is basically just a big furry trout with legs. You simply remove everything from vent to gills and you are good to go.

Remember to treat the deer like meat you bought from Freddies, keep it cool and out of the sun and get it home.
