First post-2010 Idaho elk
« on: October 02, 2010, 02:06:52 PM »
First post-I have been reading posts for the past 2 years with nothing good to add- Here is my 2010 Idaho elk.  7 days in the wilderness, 50+ miles on foot.  Got tired of applying in Washington (13 preference points and nothing) green scores around 330.

I shot him on the 4th day, averaged around 12 miles per day. Some days more and some less.  The last two days were getting him on mules and nursing two sets of blisters.

I was sweating the fact that I had a pair of older binoculars.  When I got up there, it was like a timber maze, with 'shooting alleys' no longer than 100 yards, slightly longer in the burnt timber.  Multiple bulls ducking in and out of the trees with no more than 5 seconds to set up and pull the trigger.  Binoculars stayed in the tent the whole week.

It was nice, however to know that if you ran into a bull, no matter how many points, that it was legal.  That took some of the guesswork out of the quick shots.  Just make sure it wasn't a cow and you were good.  Yet another luxury of hunting in a state with realistic hunting laws.

Dam fine bull, I would rather hunt Idaho than Washington every year, there is a way better chance of bringing a trophy home.

congrats, exact reason why i have hunted idaho the last four years and not washington. great bull, have seen a few bulls like that in idaho the last few years but yet to get one that big. was a tough year for locating elk this year due to lack of bugling, how bout you.

Sounds like it was a good hunt!  Way to earn it - you have every right to be proud of that.
