Which tactic would you use?
« on: October 02, 2010, 02:09:02 PM »
Hey all,

I've got a Carlson reed call that sounds really good.  I actually found it in the mud on a forest road, cleaned it up, and now its a staple in my pack.

But I've never called anything in with it.  It makes an awesome cow elk squeak.  But if I blow on it recklessly, it sounds a lot like a rabbit in distress.  It might be a dual call, but I'm not sure.

The point of my question is if one had it in their mind to go out and call for bear, would they have a better chance and trying to sound like a cow elk, or a distressed varmint?

it depends, on the area. we have never done very good calling bear with elk calls. but we do not have many elk in our area. they are few and far between. in a area with a high elk population it can be very deadly. i have a lot of friends that have killed a lot of bear with elk calls. i do best with fawn distress myself.

Don't know anything about calling bears, never tried it myself.  The guy I worked for this summer was elk hunitng last year, bugeling at a monster bull, and a big old color phase bear came into the call and he shot it at 15 yards, so elk calls do work, but who know how often that will work though.

Hey thanks for the invite.  I actually had reserve drill this weekend, so that kind of leaves me high and dry.  Did you make it out today?
