Guess the bears age.
« on: March 24, 2008, 07:20:32 PM »
So let’s get the juices flowing for spring bear. Most of you have seen these pics before and may have read the stories, but one thing I didn’t post was the ages of these bears.
So I will post these 2006 pics with a little description and you can guess the ages according to WDFW.

1. The first bear I shot in 2006 was a male that field dressed at 120 lbs that came into my distress calls. His pads were almost 4.5 inches across. This was the 3rd week of Aug.

2. My brother’s archery bear was a male that field dressed at 245lbs. The front pads were 4 ¾ inches and squared 6ft with the skull green scored at 18 10/16. This was the second week of Sept.

3. The second bear I killed in 2006 was this female that field dressed at 130lbs. She was about 5ft and had the remains of a fawn in her stomach. This was the 3rd week of Sept.

I'm not gonna even try.  I shot a sow in Crescent City about the size of your last one that the CA dept of F & G said was 9.5 yrs old.  How 'bout the hunter?  Not too long in the tooth yet.

Most of you are pretty close.

Here are the ages that were given to my by WDFW.

1. 2.5
2. 4.5
3. 4.5

It was interesting to me that the 4.5 year old boar and sow were almost 50% different in weight and that the 1st and 3rd were two years apart in age but the same weight.

I will see if I can did up some more pics of bears that I have age data for in a day or so.

Actually I should have had a 3rd that year, but I chose to take my bow instead of a rifle with me to POW.
