Wow that'd be awesome. A shotty cougar. Gotta love it.

If he'd edit out 6-7 minutes of his chest thumping and "yes yes yes yes" stuff it's be better.  :chuckle:  :chuckle:

I'm wondering what the hell is he wearing orange for  ??? Camouflage with orange over the top of it. Makes a lot of sense. Don't cats see color?

I don't see how that cat got killed.  He is sitting directly in the sunlight with a blued glossy barrel, a shotgun, and blaze orange.  Must have been a young cat.

That was a young cat.  He was successful, but man that is a good what not to do video.  Way too much movement, he got lucky with a young cat.  Congrats to him. Was he using a 20 ga?  Looked like when he was re-loading the shells were yellow, maybe it's just my screen.  He should take up drinking decaf.   :chuckle:

Anything worth doing you might as well do it right the first time and every time.  I was just pointing out that he tipped the odds in the cats favor big time with the no no's.

I have never hunted a day in my life for a cat, so no, I am not as succesful of a hunter as this guy.

I think you misunderstand the critical comments. Are you saying you think this is the way to do it?  We have all done things wrong and gotten lucky.  But if folks want to be consistent and not do a once in a lifetime event, then even he should look at this and say what can I do better next time.  I venture to say he could go out and do this a thousand times and never call in another cat....then again he could go out the next time and get lucky again.  I have called in plenty of bears and three cats so far, and I've made plenty of mistakes.  I try and learn from those and get better each time.  That's all these comments are.

Sure that wasn't you, Kain?!?! Take a trip to AZ lately?

He saw it, then went over and set up on it. Obviously didn't have a clue what he was doing, but as you can see, it didn't matter! Goes to show how knowing where one is at is 90% of the battle. Definatley a young, dumb cat, but hey, he tagged it!

I've heard several cougars, live in the timber, second hand (stories), and on video now, calling back to distress. My theory is that young cats relate distress to a social interaction, because they've only heard distress when they were with Mom or littermates while making a kill. They've never heard prey distress when another cat wasn't there. So they call out to it.

     I think it's a pretty good theory...

I wish it was me but sadly I have never even seen a cougar in my 20+ years of hunting.

That sounds like a reasonable theory.  Maybe he has had good luck stealing kills also and hasnt learned that its important to be quite.

As far as the orange and shiny gun my theory is a little movement and/color might be a good thing as long as they dont recognize you as a threat.  If a predator hears distress Im sure it expects to see something making it and causing it.  Thats why decoys work even if they dont look like anything specific.  As long as you dont look human and dont go overboard it might not be as critical as we think.  ?   :dunno:

Orange not required in AZ for hunting predators, but he was hunting on a military installation down by Tucson. May be a requiement while hunting on Army Fort.

That explains it. Thanks. That baffled me, why anyone would wear orange while trying to call in predators.

Nope, just LOTS of stands.  I call a bear in about every 25 or so stands.  I believe we all call in MORE lions then we know, however I believe with rainshadow's new sounds that number will come down a fair bit, as far as lions are concerned.   :hello:

I hope so (with Rainshadows sounds) I have made countless calling stands and have yet to call in a (confirmed) bear or cougar.  A few bobcats and coyotes so I think Im doing right but havent seen any big guys yet.  Of course cold calling doesnt have the best odds either.   :dunno:  Cant wait to start seeing the pics from this season.

Not saying it can't be done.

I would think if a cougar could hear the mouse squeak he would come look. I have called in a bobcat just sucking on my knuckle. I had seen the cat run across the road. I stopped my pickup and stood by a tree and sucked on my knuckle making a mouse squeak. After about 5 minutes I decided I better get back on the job. I stepped one step ahead to look in the direction the cat had ran. The bobcat jumped up with in 8 feet of me and ran off. The mouse squeak/knuckle sucked on noise could be any small animal, so I think a cougar would come in.

I really didn't see any of the comments as "critizicing" him.  :dunno:  They were just comments on how lucky he was in getting that cat when he didn't follow many of the normal procedures for calling in predators. I thought the guy was hilarious with how excited he was. Of course the guy in the video isn't reading this so even if he got criticism what's the big deal?

Boy, oh boy, do I agree. Most people never ever will see a cougar and would sh!t themselves if they did. People always find something wrong with stuff like this. Can't criticize the guy, he's the one that got the cat. I had my gun on one 2 years ago. I was shaking so bad I couldn't of shot it if I wanted too, which I did !!!! I used to be on Primos Cabin Chat. You talk about a bunch of backasswards people. Criticized everything. :'(

I think people were just trying to point out that safety orange, movement, direct sun and a shiny gun are not ideal for predator hunting especially mountain lions.  Maybe the terrain or the brush kept him hidden from the cat, who knows.

Still a cool video to me.  Called in to close range with hand calls, no decoys, less than ideal camouflage and taken with a shotgun.  How rad is that.  Just goes to show that you will never get anything sitting around looking at a computer, no matter how good your technique is.   :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

I'd just never seen or heard of anybody calling predators while wearing orange.   :dunno:

there is a video of someone calling yotes in a Santa suite. its not about color, its about movement
