Shooter bear?
« on: October 04, 2010, 05:50:57 PM »
Unfortunately I wasn't able to make it out with my dad this past weekend. He came across this guy then called me on my cell to tell me "You should have been here." :chuckle: I may have to go try to find this guy, just need an excuse to give the wife :chuckle: Any guesses on weight?

The average boar in WA is 170, the average sow in WA is 140.  Most of the time if you look at a bear and think oh that dude is at least 200-250, it's more likely to be 140 to 160.  Bears are almost always overestimated.  WA state has some fatties, but the average size bear is not that big compared to other states.  I say you should go shoot this bear and let us know what it really weighs.  :)

I will first qualify my response in that I have yet to shoot a bear. It's on my bucket list.
What I will say is that from what I've heard and read, a bear's relative size can be determined, at least, in one way by the size of it's ears in relation to it's head/body. The first picture looks to me like he has pretty good sized ears, which should dictate a smaller or younger bear. Like I said, this is from "book knowledge", and not practical experience. That being said, my novice guestimation would be.............

187 lbs. 9 ounces.                                   ;)
If man was not supposed to eat animals, God wouldn't have made them out of meat.

150-175.  It cracks me up how many 250-300 pounders are out there in the woods.  In Wa state 250 is a good bear.  I'm no expert at judging size on bears, but it seems every bear I hear getting taken is 250-300 pounds.  Then when you actually see the 250 pounder it ends up being a 150 pound 3 year old.
