weatherby .300
« on: October 07, 2010, 12:40:43 PM »
My friend has a weatherby mark 4 that he is willing to sell me we havent discussed price but i think he would let it go for less than 500. it's in good condition, no scope though. Im trying to get an idea what the rifle would be worth. I mostly bow hunt and this rifle would be for bear, future out of state trips for deer/elk/antelope or if i ever draw a moose/bighorn/mt.goat tag. i think this would be a good all around rifle. whats you'r opinion?

Sure, good all around cartridge but expensive if you have to purchase ammo and also can be a little hard on the shoulder. You might want to shoot it first, if you haven't already, to be sure the recoil isn't more than you're comfortable with.

For under $500 if it's in good shape, it would be a pretty good buy on a gun/caliber that would be adequate for all the the species hunted in North America.  I echo Bobcats sentiments that if you do not handload, it is expensive to shoot.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

x2

Will kill anything but expensive to buy ammo for and kicks pretty good.

yep x2 to all said. factory loads are spendy. and i echo the shoot it first and see what you think of the gun. even if it does not have a scope you can still feel what the recoil is like. very good cal for anything around :twocents:

Most people that have and keep a 300wby love them. If recoil is to much, you will know quickly. Definitely one of the best 300mags. Get some dies and be ready to reload.

that is a good buy. most 300 will never have a barrel shot out, unless they are owned by a gorilla

I reload for mine. Always shot 180's through it. I loaded up some 150's and went shooting last week. Id let my grandma shoot the 150's. Huge difference in recoil.

When you are shooting a elk, deer, etc. you will never even know the gun kicked what so ever.  I love mine and have had plenty of success with it.  In good shape 500 is an awesome price.  Expensive to shoot but I like just using 1 shot per animal and then its not an issue. :IBCOOL:

All ammo is expensive these days so dont let that turn you away.  I shoot a 300 Weatherby and the ammo I'm shooting is Weatherby ammo and only costs $50 bucks a box.  Thats pretty comparable to alot of other calibers.

All ammo is not expensive... I buy 7mm Rem Mag ammo for $22.00 a box right here in Seattle at Big5 of all places. I own a couple other magnums and for the price of 300 RUM or Weatherby ammo I can buy 2 boxes for my 7 mag. If you don't reload buying ammo for $50 to $60 a box gets old pretty fast, especially if you like to shoot :twocents:

"Only $50 a box"...  Wow.  That's about 2.5x more than most boxes of ammo. Wish I had your money.

You are right, that is pretty comparable to the price of 2.5-3 boxes of .308 winchester that I frequently shoot.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.
