hunting in western washington
« on: March 26, 2008, 08:34:29 AM »
Anyone have any advice on where to go elk hunting between mount st. Helens, mount adams, and mount ranier on a general archery tag.   Somewhere i can get away from all of the road hunters and find a good size group of elk.    If you dont want to post it for everyone to see you can e mail me at     hedgesjp@alfredstate.edu

Yeah good luck with that one !!

If I want to get away from the crowds and find some of the biggest elk herds I usually hunt around Mount Adams Lake. It seems to be a little place that not too many folks really hunt, Most other places are covered up with roads so it is hard to get away from the crowd !!!  :chuckle:

I would look at a map, and find an area with not too many roads to gain access to.  Then go out and scout it.  All of the areas you mention hold good numbers of elk.  Beating the crowd means hoofin it a good ways in.

Seriously Hedge... there are elk ALL over the area you described. Get some maps and pic an area with no roads (which, by the way, isnt always necessary) and then start looking for the terrain that holds elk... well...it all holds elk!...so with that said, pic a spot a couple miles off the road and get in there! You talking rifle or bow?

Better luck on the eastern side.

I hate the west side.

Folow these previous posts.  Starting to get a lot more hunterts down that way.  But also depends on what you want to hunt, bulls or cows.

Hunt closer to St. Helens and get off of the roads and you will do fine.  Most folks roadhunt even during archery.  I'll e-mail you tomorrow when I have more time.

can you hunt the goat rocks and mt. adams wilderness area's on a general tag or do you have to draw a tag, because i see that they are part of elk areas 5058 and 5059 that are special hunt areas

You can hunt both areas with a general rifle or archery tags during the general seasons.  But if you want to apply for the early rifle hunt then you will have to draw the rifle permit.

One thing to keep in mind, both of these areas have a lot of trails and a lot of nonhunters in there during the archery seasons just hiking and riding horses.  So you will have to get off the trails.  Get in the deep dark canyons and you will do fine.

But has anyone evr done any good in the Goat Rocks Wilderness? I heard one guy got a nice elk but they went way back in on horses.
