Great cartridge.  I have a Win M100 in .284.........what model are you looking at? The .284 was introduced in 1963.

My father has one. It's a good round for deer and bear. I don't think it is quite enough for elk but he has killed a number of elk with it. If it's in any kind of shape sounds like a good deal.

I'm not sure why the .284 never caught on.  It was kind of a short mag before its time (well, except for the mag part  :) )............it has a short, fat case and Winchester had a lever gun (M88) and semi auto (M100) chambered in .284.

It would be sweet to have a bolt action in .284 Win so that you could take advantage of the case capacity..........but might as well have a 7-08.    Factory 150gr loads will get around 2800 fps.

With the popularity of the 7mm-08, the .284 is obsolete now.  You will be lucky to find a box of ammo in the stores and if you do it will be expensive.

I love the .284, we have two Savage 99's in 284 in the family.  When I was a kid, they provided more food for our table than any of our other rifles combined.  I killed many deer and my first elk with one of them.  It is a great caliber, but as Curly said, it's next to impossible to get ammo.  Heck, we were reloading 30 years ago because of the same problem.
Nothing witty here.... move along.

If you just like to have the odd calibers, I think that the 284 is great. No really any better than a 7mm-08, but certainly no worse. Depending on the gun it's chambered in I think that the 284 is actually closer to the 280 Rem. In the Winchester 88 or 100 I think that it's closer to the 7mm-08. But in a bolt gun you can run it a little faster.

I don't have a 284, but I do have a 338/284 Winchester. The case is really a neat design that was just ahead of it's time in the mid 60s. I say buy it if it's a good deal.

The .284 win is a little better than 7mm-08 due to better case design.  But you can only utilize this better case design with a magazine that holds handloaded rounds with the bullet seated longer than factory rounds.  Older magazines were too short to hold rounds that could reach their full potential.

I would love a model 88 in .284 but would have to do something about the magazine otherwise a 7mm-08 would be a wiser choice

Hey fellas, went to look at that 284 win, haven't bought it yet but did come back with some info, The guy says it is a 284 win , that is stamped on the barrel but, he also says it's a model K98, honestly left with more questions than answers.  Maybe a custom made ?  Or maybe I'm custom with a "K".  :chuckle: I'm thin kn maybe a  :bdid:

I would have to see it to be sure but sounds like a custom barreled German k98 mauser action so the 1943 in your first post would be accurate.  If in good shape and a decent price I would snap it up.  It should have a magazine that is not restricted to shorter than optimal factory .284 so you would be able to (if you reload or perhaps a friend reloads) load the .284 to it's full potential which makes it better than the 7mm-08.  An earlier post compares the .284 to a short mag, this is not accurate.  It is like the 7mm-08 based on the .308 case, the difference being the shoulder angle.  Shoulder angle can have a substantial impact on powder capacity and cartridge performance.  Ackley Improved cartridges are essentially just a change in shoulder angle which increases powder capacity and burn efficiency. If there were a 7mm-08 Ackley Improved it would look like the .284 Win.

This isn't actually accurate. The 284 is a unique case design that's larger in diameter than the 308 case, but does use a rebated 308 sized rim (.473"). The 284 is .500" at the case head and a 308 is .470".  The body is also longer by .215". It's a pretty noticeable differance when they're side by side.

Got schooled.  Thanks for pointing that out.  I was going by rim diameter
