You got helped, a little research and effort on your part is now required...

It is not like your going to get everyone telling you the exact spot to go.  :dunno:  You just have to get out there and find a spot to go just like everyone here.

Nope. This isn't as good a site as you apparently thought it was. Your post asking for help has been up for less than 12 hours. What did you expect? Not everybody is going to be familiar with the Wind River unit. I know I am not. And if I did know it, I most likely wouldn't tell anyone on the internet where to go. I may give a small hint or two through a private message. But even that I may not do if it's someone who has never posted on here before. It happens every year about this time of year, people post asking for good locations to hunt, they get some good advice, and then NEVER post again. What is really frustrating is to give someone some info whether it be through a private message or on the open forum, and then you never even get a "thanks."   :bash:

this is a great site and community. asking for help right before the opener is a  :bdid: there is not a ton of members on here that hunt that unit. there is some but why would they give out there info to someone else right before the season :dunno: maybe spend a little time here and do some searching on here before jumping to conclusion about this community and the people. because you are 100% wrong with your thoughts. or better yet get out in the woods and do some scouting.

dickwilly,

You did get a tip, and hunting season is upon us.  Can't expect much more than that in 12 hours during one of the busiest times of the year for the members of this site.  If you give it a chance you'll find there are a lot of great people here to help a new hunter get started right.  Wish I knew something about that unit but unfortunately, I don't.  If you are looking for a basic "how to" hunting approach, help people help you by asking for pointers and be specific.  Most people are more than willing to share their knowledge and expertise regarding the "how" part; just don't expect a whole lot on the "where to go" part.  If you stick to public land and/or private timber company land, the rule of thumb is they get a lot of pressure so you have to get back in or find overlooked spots that hold game.  Finding game is best done by glassing or boot time hiking, or both.  Not knowing anything else about you or what you need help with, I hope this helps.

The biggest reason you were basically ignored is "Posts: 4"
If you spent some time reading past posts, you would notice that until you have shared some stories and pictures, that most of the members on here are reluctant to divulge information to someone they dont know.
Especially if they have spent any time at all in the area you are asking about, they might not want to take a chance on possibly having a new person camping/hunting in the same area they do.
you are probably a decent person, but some A-holes do show up on this site,
I know nothing about the area you asked about, so did not respond, but....

GMU 574-WIND RIVER (Skamania and Klickitat counties):

2006 General Harvest = (Deer - 80) ( Elk - 102) ( Bear - 8) ( Cougar - 1) (Turkey - 15)

2007 General Harvest = (Deer - 103)  ( Elk - 89)( Bear -16)  ( Cougar - ?)(Turkey -10)

2008 General Harvest = (Deer - 59) ( Elk - 44) ( Bear - 19) (Cougar - ?) (Turkey -5)

2009 General Harvest = (Deer - 136) ( Elk - 89) ( Bear - ?) (Cougar - ?) (Turkey -4)

Oklahoma rd and South Prairie road all have great access  There are numerous access points just south of the ice caves.  Huckleberry mountain holds some elk.  Lots of huckleberries means lots of bears and turkeys.  There are good populations of deer in here, fairly open underbrush.  Lots of hunters in this unit during the early season.

Wow, this burns me up. I am also fairly new to this site. But to expect that someone would tell you where to hunt at all is ridiculous. Then to come back with a bad attitude about it is beyond comprehension. Stay on here a while and make some friends, then go hunt with those friends. Kind of a give and take thing. You show them some places they show you some places. Just my way of looking at it. Try not to give all of us newbies a bad rep.

Funny you should mention that. I haven't duck hunted in about ten years but the wife really wants to go so we were both at the sportsmans warehouse today looking for new shotguns. Send me a pm and maybe we can make it happen after deer season.

Looking through my old duck hunting gear and it's a little thin. Looks like I'm in the market for some new deeks this year. I do have a couple of decent holes though. When the hunting is slow you can always catch some chunky largemouth.

It is a little facetious to expect to come on here and make a post requesting information without at least some more background information.  In your post it says you have spent ten years camping, hiking backpacking etc. in the area which is probably a lot more time than the majority of the people on here have done so you should really probably know the area better than most.  Hunting is a pretty secretive sport, with lots of notellum ridges.  People are hesitant to give out information to friends, let alone complete strangers.  Alot of people have been burnt by telling people about certain areas and then having them overrun with orange the next time they go out.  Sometimes it takes a year or two but no-one likes to have their hunting area overrun.  The units you are talking about are not huge units either.  I am actually going to be hunting in the Siouxon for elk this year for the first time ever with a buddy that has been asking me to come over and hunt elk with him.  If you just happened to find this site and that is why you are looking for information so close to the start of the season, state this in your post so people understand that you haven't been lurking for months without contributing to the site and are just looking for specifics.  Tell people why you decided to start hunting for example.  There is a wealth of information and camaraderie around here but you have to give it a little time.

However I'm not gonna be much help to any of you if I can't so much as get a "GENERAL DIRECTION" to head in like I originally posted.  I never asked for specifics or honey holes.  I have been around the outdoors long enough to know that much.

Your "general direction" has already been specified, by you! The WIND RIVER GMU!  It's not a large unit. And as I said, there probably aren't a lot of people that know that unit. And besides, as has already been said, it's HUNTING SEASON right now! People who hunt are actually out HUNTING or SCOUTING on the weekends. You posted on a Sunday morning and are now pissed off because your post was up not even 12 hours and nobody told you where in the Wind River to hunt!  Don't let the door hit you on the way out!   >:(   :bash:

Wow and to think I waited until post number 1000 to ask for help, must be either I am smart enough to understand how an open forum works or I got off my backside and went and scouted PRIOR to season.

Have to agree with all comments so far, can't come in here the first couple of posts and ask for help. Kind of a slap in the face for most of us. Hunting areas are sacred pieces of ground that we have discovered over the years. Almost the same thing as me meeting you for the first time shaking your hand and asking if I can borrow your rig to drive around.

Like said there are a lot of people in here with a lot of knowledge, you just have to get to know them.

Well it became obvious this would be the only way to get some responses.  Soooooo.  I guess the "first time" hunting must have slipped by some.  I would and will gladly share any info or pointers I come across.  However I'm not gonna be much help to any of you if I can't so much as get a "GENERAL DIRECTION" to head in like I originally posted.  I never asked for specifics or honey holes.  I have been around the outdoors long enough to know that much.

I have been reading, researching, mapping, google earthing, scouting on foot, glassing etc for two months.  Just thought I might get a "in 20XX we saw some promising sign around monte cristo range"  or "last time I hunted there we heard of game south of little huckleberry moutain".

If I find any activity I will certainly post info and pics here...  I understand some may post right now and never return.  I guess all I can ask is for a little faith.  If not then, my mistake.

First off, welcome.
Second, take a pill and chill out a bit.

It is ok to be frustrated, but passive - aggressive comments won't get you much info.

As stated before, you can't expect a lot of repies right now and you were already given a "general direction". You state that you don't want honey holes, but by your post it is obvious that you want "exact directions" to an area that has sign. Take the info you have and apply that to your two months of research and see what you come up with.

You mentioned that you camped and spent a lot of time in the woods. Some stories and photos would go a long way to warming up the membership. You also mentioned that your not going to be much help. I disagree. Tips on hiking, camping, backpacking, cooking, fishing, etc are always welcomed.

I replied to your original post.  Call it a free'be for everyone on the forum.  I'll agree though... Expecting a response, six days before season.. Hell, I've been busy and not on the forum much at all in the last few days. Didn't even see your original post. Saw this B.S. Rant about not getting a handout first.  Hell... I'm probably one of the few on this forum that's ever hunted down there.

Be warned, (as anyone also in East Klick too), the weather in there can change in an instant. The hunter that is not prepared for the worst could find himself in a pickle real quick. Wind storms to ice or torential rains. I've seen all of that in a six day span. 80 degrees one day and three days later frozen roads.

here I had such high hopes after reading so many other posts.  I know I'm new to the site but also new to hunting period and simply asked for a little info on what general direction to head in the wind river unit for deer and or elk.  Got one response... carson to the 90 road.   thanks  I guess I should stick between I -205 and pendleton too.  maybe I didn't find as good as a community and resource as I thought I did.   >:( :bash:
heres waht you asked for.. Re: First time! just need a general direction for wind river / siouxon PLEASE HELP!
here's my reply ....north of Carson all the way to 90 is pretty good, lots of people in the Wind and low deer numbers.

what more do you want? from snow melt to hunting season I spend every available weekend that I can in the mountains, I do this to be ready for that day when it comes, I dont do this to bennifit you, I do it for me and my family and friends, nobody is going to put you in an area they have scouted so you can shoot the deer they have been watching all summer, and lesson their chances at harvesting an animal.
After you hunted last year and decided you didn't like the area you should have been preparing for this years hunt in the summer as I have done and others on this great site have done all summer long.

From One Newbie to another dude, CHILL OUT!

I have learned SO much from this site, but just hanging back and reading posts. Surf the site, chances are your questions have already been asked and covered! There is allot of info on here, and pissing off the members who share info because you didn't get as detailed of a response as you wanted is the wrong way to establish yourself. The guys and gals on here are passionate about hunting and preserving our ability to pass hunting on to our kids as well as bringing new people into the hunting community.

It's 6 days before hunting season, people are already jacked up. It may take a while and a few more posts before you get people willing to share more detailed information with you (especially now).

If you want tips, wait until AFTER hunting season, and read the stories and pics that are posted. Then buy a map, go scout and instead of asking for info, make a post like "I went out scouting in this GMU and saw this type of sign and this is what I am thinking, am I off base?". You will get allot more info asking about what you should be looking for 2 months BEFORE hunting season, than 6 days before.

Brand new guy to the board and what are you expecting? Some honey hole? Put in some time, pay your dues, get out in the woods and find a spot. Maybe not a lot of people who read your post know of the wind river unit. Maybe they put in a lot of time and don't want to just give away their info they worked so hard to find out.

Already bashing the board and members with a handful of posts just because nobody is bending over backwards for your needy attitude?  :'(

:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: Just looked at your total of five posts. Your first two are asking where to go, right before the season. A bit late for that don't you think? Your next post says thanks. Your last two are flaming the board and members for not telling you exactly where to go. And this is over a weekend when people are out doing things instead of sitting on their computers.  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Shows what I know about the area.  I though you were asking about Wyoming hunting on the Wind River.  Looks like you've got plenty of good areas given to you to try out, though.  Good Luck!

I can say from my experience on this site that people on here are very helpful.  I got help last year when I first started using this site and I even took a young guy out and tried to get him on some Elk this year from posting on this site.  We came up empty but had a good experiece hunting.  Sometimes it's all about giving something back.  I never expected to have anyone put me on a site without proving that I've done my homework.  If I have not those on this site will surely inform me of that usually with constructive criticism or some decent pointers.  There are people on here that have been very successful and we all can use their knowledge to be better hunters and possibly increase our success at the same time.

I hear this with my job all the time "you have to have thick skin".  So, regroup, set some expectations on what you expect to get from this site and hopefully you'll see the benefits.  Good luck.

Here's a tip for ya on where to go in the wind river unit.  First take a right hand turn on that one road (sorry can't remember the name, but I am sure you will be able to find it), then take another right, and yet another right, and then finally another right. Should be easy, if you get lost just take four lefts and you will be back where you started from.   Good Luck and welcome to the site!  :hello:

In Michigan right now cnc my call parts hope to be home by nov 1st. Then head back up. We get alot of people with one post wanting to know a area. Most don't stick around. Get to know every one. Rick

All I have to say is the guys and gals on this site give way more information then I would ever give to a stranger. I have been burnt to many times to trust more than three guys with my hunting spots. These guys coming on here asking for help is why I come on here for a good laugh every once in a while. Find a new sport! Hunting is what it is called. It involves scouting and getting out in the woods.  :yike:
I live by the rule you scratch my back, I scratch yours! I had one guy that took me on and returned the favor. Just got his uncle his first bull.
Good Luck hunting DickWilly!

if it is true that you have been hiking and camping around the area for 10 years or more than you should already know where some spots to go are. have you seen deer or elk on any of your trips? focus on those areas and explore a little more and more detailed.

Im sure ones he gets "out there" with all of the "general directions" he's requested hell soon be posting for directions out of wherever he's at, because he obviously hasn't spent much time in the field, or he blind as a bat and just can't see the animals and will be lost in no time and with his years of hunting experience we shold be houndin him for tips  :chuckle:

here I had such high hopes after reading so many other posts. >:( :bash:

Actually, if you have spent time on the site you would have known better than expect a ton of help with little to no other posts. You would have known that it often takes time to get that one member who has the info you seek to finally see your miserable thread. Plus, if you had any clue, you would have realized how incredibly busy most of the modern rifle guys are right now so close to the opener.

Lastly, if you had been actually paying attention previsouly on the site, you would have noticed the value in it, the good people who make it happen, and you would have been more patient.  Instead, you come off as some whiny teenager who wants attention. Congratulations!

Edit: And no Ellensburg, the whiny teenager comment is not directed at you... :chuckle:

Your not a hunter your a hiker. If you were a hunter you would know better on what you just pulled. Sorry I missed your post because I spent the weekend looking at deer. This is the best forum I have ever seen. You should have done more reading and you would have known what to expect with the post you put up. These guys are a great group and love to help but they are not going to guide you. Good luck!  I wish you started out on a different foot because it's great to see people take up a new interest in hunting.

well dude, I do know a little about the wind river area butwill not tell you jack. what  could you have possibly expected to get from the great guys and gals here when you start off like that? be nice, add what can to the forum and you will get some in return, I know I have. it may take a year but with the right attitude you will be getting some very good info and maybe even some spots that are good to hunt. :twocents:

Just last month I said exactly where I killed this buck on here.  You just need to pay attention. :)  In fact I sent a fellow member to a spot where I saw a 30 incher THIS YEAR. He now knows within a 100 feet or so where that buck was.  I am looking forward to seeing his field photo with it.  When done, I think we'll go catch some fish.  He has a fly I want to try  That won't happen to everyone as I don't see that many. :)

That sure is a pretty brookie in that first picture, I love those fish !
I dont hunt the Wind River Unit, I just came back to the west-side after 20 years chasing Elk in the Manastash.
I also Archery Hunt (Traditional), won't go back to the "pumpkin patch" until drawn for multi, I enjoy it too much.
