East side public pheasants

I have a Jack Russell and am regularly over on the east side working. I was hoping someone could give me a general idea of where I can look for a pheasant or two on public lands dont really care of there are a bunch just want to walk with the dog and the side by side ithaca 20 with a chance.

I have killed a few chuckar in the Yakima valley area and have heard that there are pheasants in that area but have never seen one.

My jack cant really hunt hard all day being so small so she is good for about two hours...fun to watch though and great nose!!

The WDFW web site has the interactive map feature that is pretty dang handy..Use the filters and just search for pheasants..

Give Me a better Idea of which area you want to hunt then I can point you in a direction.

Around Ellensburg Yak area are I think 3 release sites and the Yak reservation for pheasants. Seeing very few this year. I always go around Moses Lake or the E side of the state.

I would hunt over near Vantage.Royal City.Mattawa..

Down towards Yakima you can hunt the reservation with the squaw permit.Sunnyside has a release site..Ive gotten into some good number of quail there..The Hills down around Richland have a fair amount of birds and some pretty good feel free to hunt.
Get in around the Big River.
The in laws live over Zillah.
So When I go over there We trip around and see whats out there.I spend alot of time going over to see My daughter and I dont like taking the same roads so I will branch out and see whats out there.I like to stop and talk with the guys that work in the grain elevators.There Bored and are always happy to see someone and toll out some good advice.

That is pretty cool that you hunt birds with your Jack Russell.

My wife and I were hunting over by Moses Lake several years ago and we watched a guy with 3 dachshunds hunting pheasants.  Once he was done hunting, we had a good time chatting with the guy and petting his little dogs.  Our lab liked meeting the little dogs too.  They really loved getting out there after the birds.

You hunt birds with a jack russel?  That's hilarious...must be a funny sight.  They're full of energy and really brave - I bet that dog gets the job done for a little while, at least.  Does it bring back the birds when you shoot them or just run off like a dingo with a baby?

I heard that the pheasant hunting on the Yakama reservation wasn't great but that there are some quail around.  Fun to shoot at, anyway.

About 15 years ago I took my son to Fort Lewis where we hunted a release site.  There was an older guy, with a Basset Hound, getting ready to hunt.  When he walked out with his dog, he had a pipe in his mouth, a cup of coffee in his hand and a double barreled 20 gauge in the other. 

My son and I kind of chuckled about it.  That is until the same man showed up about 20 minutes later with two pheasants!  From that day on I never questioned a mans choice in hunting partners.

There used to be two older guys that hunted Scatter creek with full size poodles and they would always get their birds too. Somewhere in my internet travels I ran across a guy that guided bird hunters and he always used a Jack Russel along with a pointer. The dog was so good that he had customer requests that if they came back that they had to hunt with the Jack Russel. Any dog will do as long as you train them right.

AKBowman is your jack older because my when my mom had one that dog would not stop for nothing and would not back down from anything. If she moved off from something it was because she was figuring out another way to get it. She was hell on cats, coons, possums, mice, rats, and chickens. The last one was her demise.

I run 3 English Setters and 1.5 Jack Russell's.  The Jack's go deep into the thick cover where the larger dogs can't.  They are also machines when it comes to rabbits.

How do people find out when pheasants are actually released on the sites? I have been wanting to check out the wenas release and the whiskey dick. I know that when they do release them up the wenas that I always run into the birds when I have my rifle but once they get hunted for a few weeks there are literally no pheasant left (coyotes, weather, etc).

They are usually pretty quiet about when they are releasing.  Generally a Thursday or Friday morning.  You can expect one probably first or second weekend of season and one around Thanksgiving but I don't really know the dates.  There are probably one or two more, as well.  Good luck.  I went out to the Whiskey Dick last year and I literally saw 18 guys hunting it - and I never made it out of the parking lot.  I saw that and left.

Yeah, if you're coming from Eburg there is a green gate on the left a mile or two (guessing - haven't been there since last year) before you get to the Wild Horse Wind Farm.  If you get to the wind farm you've gone too far.
