Duck meat odor?
« on: October 17, 2010, 06:21:45 PM »
My dad brought some west side ducks home today from a successful hunt this morning. As soon as he got home we processed them and put them in the fridge.. These ducks smell like nothing I've ever smelled.. Almost like a mix of mold and ammonia.. I've cleaned a lot of ducks and have never smelled anything like this. Its not like a rotten meat smell or anything, and the meat isn't discolored at all.

Would you eat these ducks? I currently have them trimmed up and soaking in salt water.. I guess I will decide in the morning.

Thats why i don't hunt at Hanford anymore! :chuckle:

Not too sure I've cleaned a lot of birds and never came across that? What kind of ducks? Did they all smell the same? If it was just one id throw it out. If they all did i might give it a shot.

Well if you trust these after soaking them in salt water, you might try this out. Get a granny smith apple, some garlic, an onion cut up, salt and boil for about 10 minutes. Then take out put bacon strips on & put in oven on 350 for about 20 minutes or so. That should do the trick. These ducks that are in the salt water eating have a strong smell to them. Hope this works for you .. :)

could be their environment. I always thought divers smelled kinda rotten the moment you shoot and clean them personally.

THe ones I shot had no smell- valley ducks no sewer plants close by. Worst ever was when I used to hunt Wallula every weekend. Early season ducks would fly right off the IBP waste ponds down to the flats. Open those guys up when it was 70 degrees out and WHOOOLLLYYY CRAPPP they could turn your stomach and make your mouth start watering bad.....
