Over your limit

Opening day my hunting partner and I are packing out back to the truck with a limit each (all brown, mostly teal).  About halfway back my young lab takes off into the woods (he likes to take detours, the little sh*t).  When he returns he’s got big greenhead in his mouth.   Now what, between the 3 of us we have 15 ducks and dog doesn’t have a license?

if you dont want to ruin the dog praise him for the duck then chastise yourself for letting him run off leashes people they work wonders they come in leather nylon cotton and even electronic

That's a hard one.  Not the dogs fault just doing what he supposed to do.  I would leave the green head with out the dog knowing.

the part that kinda sucks is if a a gamie sees this before you leave the mallard you are over your limit so I would work on leash control when you're not in the blind. No offense, but off leash dogs are a pet peeve of mine in most scenarios (duck hunting and upland of course are typically different).

No offense, but off leash dogs are a pet peeve of mine in most scenarios (duck hunting and upland of course are typically different).

That's why I voted to throw the teal and keep the mallard. You're already over your limit, as soon as the dog brought the mallard to you. You might as well keep the bigger duck!  And I sure wouldn't blame the dog. The dog is doing what he's supposed to do.

ethically, and possibly legally speaking, you didn't kill the mallard, it's not your responsibility. It would be nice to not waste the meat if you could legally take it, but you can't. Throwing that teal back would be wasted game though as you DID kill it and then chose to toss it. that I wouldn't do.

Maybe you DID kill the mallard but didn't know it. It would have been a duck you shot at and thought you missed. Or, it would have just been in the flock with other ducks that you did knock down, and this one got a stray pellet and didn't drop immediately. Either way, if the mallard was recently killed, the game warden is not going to believe you when you tell him your dog just found it laying out there.

legally speaking get rid of it. even if you call a gamey first and explain, they won't be understanding.

ethically speaking its a tough one. you didn't kill the duck so technically its death isn't your fault. some would say not to waste the meat some would say the hawks and possums will put the meat to good use.

what would I do?... I would tuck a teal in my pocket, keep the mallard and make a bigger batch of duck teriyaki. the law and whats right doesn't always meet in the middle and you know as well as I do that most game laws are in place to keep people honest. keeping one duck over your limit that your dog found isn't a big sin in my book...  however if you shot one duck over your limit purposefully, then I would be all for a public flogging. the shame is the game dept doesn't have a portable polygraph so if caught; your guilty with little chance of being proven innocent.

so keep and eat mallard is on the "A" side and having to throw away the duck for waste is on the "B" side? but only having a limit to go home with lands in the middle. both ethical and legal, hehe.
