I love duck hunting as much or more than just about any other activity (almost) on earth. However I really dislike jump shooting. To me, that's not duck hunting at all. Duck hunting to me is about the decoying birds, wings set, landing gear down, belly beak bang!

It's like spotting and stalking a deer, whats wrong with it?

I found one spot last year pheasant hunting where I jumped a bunch of Teal, tripled on them then sat and waited.  Sure enough they all trickled back in and I had my 7 GW teal in about 30 minutes.

nothing wrong with it at all, it's just not my cup o tea. like I mentioned, I just think the decoying is the best part of the game.

I enjoy a good jump shoot with the dog just as much as a good decoy shoot.  It mixes up the week alittle.

Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

I have put out large and small spreads at different places throughout the country and this year due to the fact that modern rifle deer was open I only had two dekes not in storage a drake mallard and a teal decoy. Within ten minutes I got two birds waited a half hour at my little hidey hole and went home to spend the rest of the day with the family. Sometimes too little is just  right.

anybody hunt ducks without decoys?  i doubt i'll do any duck hunting this year, but i was just curiouse if anyone hunts without decoys,  (mainly east side)

getting back to that first post, there are lots of places to jump shoot on that east side, especially down the i90 corridor. You got all of the lakes, potholes, etc right there. But additionally, you don't have to spend $2k on decoys. You can get the job done initially for $50-100 while you're deciding if you like it.

I'd say at least my first ten hunts were all jumpshooting/pass shooting outings. I'm on the west side so idk if all jumpshoots go the same, but I was able to get a couple of birds every time i went out, and on average only spent about 1.5 to 2 hours in the field, plus you dont have to carry around all your gear, dekes, blind bag etc, just an easy in and out.

ps make sure to get permission to hunt if the land is not marked as public
