pheasant release sites?
« on: October 18, 2010, 11:44:38 AM »
i was planning on hitting up a couple pheasant release sites around my area,  and i was wondering how crowded are these areas?  or am i better off going to some different spots?  and where can i find info, (if its available) on  when they do the releases.  thanks for any help.

Quote from the WDFW Eastern WA Pheasant Enhancement web page:
"We do not provide release dates because we want to minimize crowding at the release sites and to promote the highest hunter ethics possible."

I'd be willing to bet they release a bunch of birds prior to the opener this weekend.

Cheers!

Seems like I remember reading that your pup is a young un? Twer it me I'd load up in the truck and hit the gravel roads out in the middle of nowwheres and find the birds yourself, stop the truck and get that pup on em directly, run the dog right on in there where you just saw them.By doing this you'll get the dog excited right out the gate instead of wandering aimlessly in an area possibly devoid of birds,by getting the dog into the birds immediatley it'll learn to be a real go getter versus the dogs one sees plodding 15 feet in front or behind of a hunter which have been turned loose to run all over hecks half acre to find ....nothing,to much finding nothing time and again and their drive can slip away to a mediocre plodder through multiple dry runs.Plenty of times for dry runs when they are older and new hunting grounds are tried out, puppies need to have desire flames fanned not allowed to fade through being "Ran dry"

I could be mistaken but i don't think they start the release program in eastern wa. until sometime in nov.

big flats I think release pheasants on the wednesday before the opener I know they release pheasant before the youth opener as me and my dog flushed quite a few while we were quail hunting. I went to the opener last year and while I got a pheasant there last year I wouldn't take a new dog there its really busy and you will run into other hunters and dogs. I have a new dog as well and I'm not taking him there on the opener.
