I saw the bullet hit the stump it was a rotted stump the type bears like and it was like a cloud of red dust...and after i shot my deer i double checked my scope by takeing a 200yd shot from a steady rest to see what went wrong and sure thing it was off...

4 inches lower could have easily went through the deer and blew up that same stump in the same way.

Man if I saw a 4x5 blacktail I'd be shooting behind the shoulder! Don't run into that size buck very often.

That said, good work on the spike, some meat in the freezer.

Congrats on filing your tag but I would have to agree with the others on here. From the trigger pull weight, to the fact that you adjusted shots on the fly rather than stopping and sighting in your rifle BEFORE taking another shot at an animal, to laying the meat in the dirt/on the stump all tell me one thing....that I don't want to be anywhere near the same GMU as you are during hunting season.

Sorry man but that's the truth. Whatever "training" you might have had, it wasn't good training and certainly didn't teach you much in the way of firearm safetly. (And yes, I have had more than my fair share of training and am speaking from experience...and a lot of it)

Once again as a firearms instructor for the state,it shouldn't really matter what the poundage is set on your weapon as LONG as YOU are familiar with that weapon. Just remember SAFETY should always be your #1 consideration. Accidents dont just happen they are caused. Good tender meat buck..& remember to sight in your weapon... I just dont want to be anywhere you are. Sorry that is just the way it is ...

You took your scope off to clean your gun? You "forgot" to sight it back in? You've had 7 years of "training" with light triggers? You take "spine shots"? I don't know where to begin.... I'll just say that I think you and the sport would benefit if you teamed up with a hunter with a bit more/different experience.

Wile E.

P.S. I'm not not trying to hack on you just for sport. There are just some things described in your account of your hunt that go against how I was taught to hunt. Best of luck.

no i hunt there, take him away, TAKE HIM AWAY or at least get me a kevlar vest. Just kidding MasterTracker, the whole trigger thing isnt a big deal as long as he knows not to get the coffee jitters before hitting the bush. Its a great write up, sounds like he had an awsome hunt

Where's the story?  Did this get moderated?

I see your signature says you "see like an eagle"....maybe that's how you saw your bullet was 1" high and 3" to the left...better yet that's probably how you saw his horns.

Good job though...enjoy the meat.

First of all your gun is a piece of crap, believe me I own the same one. you probably thought oh wow bore sighted right out of the box like the advertisements said when you bought it huh? Not the case. Thats probably why you missed. Remington didn't do well with the 700 series. Congrats, though not much to brag about but will be tender.
