 First spike I've ever seen boned out. A friend of ours, 49 at the time shot a little spike back when spike muley's were legal, several miles back in the hills. He threw it on his back and walked it out. Have to say I would do the same, I've only taken one deer I couldn't get out whole solo. Other than that, I guess congrats, if a spike was your goal early in the season, then you met your goal.

Wow you guys are harsh. Knocking the guys gun and his deer? Hope you all never shoot a dink or have to settle with an inexpensive gun. Been there done that myself in my younger years. I think you all need to cut a little slack now.

I agree. I felt a bit compelled to address the potential ethics/safety issues, but I have no interest in attacking his choice in rifle, or for shooting a legal, tender meat, good eating buck. I think a lot of us lose some of the good natured fun of the hunt when we switch to "trophy only". I know I've let it get too serious in the past. He's obviously got some of it right. He's got meat. I think some changes here and there might help him out, that's all. I think we could all benefit from some advice from time to time. I certainly have. Best of luck to him, and the rest of you.
