« on: October 18, 2010, 09:34:40 PM »
I went out on an afternoon hunt this afternoon, after some ordeal with being in the shooting path of another shooter and watching all the birds go to the other guy I was invited to head over and finish off the hunt with him to make it more fun and safer for the both of us, the first group of pinnys that came through I droped a pinny hen and when i got it to the blind.........IT HAD A BAND ON IT!!!!!!!!!!!!,
this is the first band ive ever gotten!!!!!!!! im sooooo hella stoked right now, and I must say, thank you very much to "boom city" for inviting me to come over and hunt with him and making it possible for me to get this band!.

What’s wrong with gunning a hen pintail, they’re tasty.

They band birds to track them. Not alot of birds are banded, so they are rare for some species and more common for others.

The band has a number that will lead you to the place banded and age of the bird.

My only band was from a mallard drake, banded in Canada, and was 9 yrs old.

My son's snow goose was banded in canada and 3 yrs old.

Never seen a pintail with a band.
Congrats.
It's not true that I am good for nothing---I can be used as a bad example!!

It could be a lottery, some bands have a dollar amount on them you can get if you call it in. I guess they're trying to get more people to call the band's in by offering cash. :dunno:

Bird banding is a universal and indispensable technique for studying the movement, survival and behavior of birds. The North American Bird Banding Program is jointly administered by the United States Department of the Interior and the Canadian Wildlife Service . Their respective banding offices have similar functions and policies and use the same bands, reporting forms and data formats. Joint coordination of the program dates back to 1923.
Banders are a select group. There are currently only 2000 Master banding permits and 3000 subpermits in the United States. Master Banders include federal and state agencies, university researchers, bird observatories, and private individuals. Waterfowl are banded only by federal and state agencies. Private individuals are not normally allowed to band waterfowl as the banding information is used to set harvest regulations.
They band a lot of birds across the U.S. and Canada yearly.  I read one report that stated over 1 million birds were banded per year.  Depending on banding locations, flyways etc., determins how many bands individuals get.  They can be very common in some places and not so common in others. .

It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

I would say that is a first year male, not a female...Nothing wrong if it was a hen...You might have a delay in reporting as many bio's have yet to submit their data...
