gut shot yote
« on: October 20, 2010, 03:23:38 PM »
went out deer hunting today and at the end of the hunt seen a yote bout 80 yards away. he was trotting down the road so i pulled the rifle up before he went into the brush and shot all i seen was a big patch of blood in the middle of his body and then he scurried off. i think i might have gut shot him so i gave him a few minutes and then couldnt find him. how do you track a yote that is gut shot?
it was my first yote so i think i had a little yote fever when i shot :bash:

My Dad hit one with a .270 and it opened him up like he swallowed a grenade. He still ran a short distance, guts getting caught on stuff as he ran. Didn't make it far though.  :chuckle:

I shot my first yote last year with my .270 at about 150yds and pretty much took out his whole stomach area. He still ran/stumbled a little ways down into the draw, but I think gravity helped him out on that one.

Just go in the brush and find him. He didn't go far I bet. I shot 1 with my 300, he did the same thing. He was about 10 feet from where his guts were. Be sure to cut his tail off and hang it on your antenna as a warning to all coyotes....... :chuckle:

I agree that if you shot him with a high powered rifle you should be able to find him. He shouldnt have been able to go very far even being gut shot. But you never know they are pretty tuff critters.. :twocents:

shot one in the back( a little back and above vitals)  he ran about 20 yards in a hole kinda, with a 30'06  the bullet doesn't have to time expand.  they are tough if not shot in the vitals.

One step not to be missed is to accurately (as far as you can) mark the location where you last saw the animal.  It is rather easy to get disoriented and not be able to resume a search from a known point.
