Feel Free to Hunt Land
« on: October 20, 2010, 10:06:32 PM »
I took my buddy down around Ewan, St. John area and we walked a few pieces of the feel free to hunt land. Didn't see anything but a very stupid (still alive) coyote. Has anyone hunted these areas south of Spokane? I have archery tags, but my buddy, Decof, just passed hunters ed and really wants to get a deer this year. He ain't in the best of shape, but he walked quite a few miles today through wheat fields, up and down. He has the determination. Any tips for me to help the guy out in regards to the feel free areas or just general public areas? I don't want to give him a "gimme"; he needs to put in the effort, but he came over and studied the maps with me and "GoHunt". I am debating taking him north tomorrow since it is an any buck unit. Thanks to all.

I would suggest you find some of the "Hunting by written permission only" signs and call the phone numbers on them.  I know several landowners from a little farther south than you are hunting and they pretty much all tag out opening weekend.  After they and their families have filled their tags they are typically more likely to give permission.  The "feel free to hunt" land can produce animals but it gets hit hard and it's typically by chance that you'll catch a legal buck on that land.  Anyways, hope this helps a little.

 :yeah:

Opening can and does produce sometimes but these areas get hit real hard. The hardest part down south is getting permission. You need to spend a day knocking on doors wearing your WSU hat and sweatshirt.

I'm pretty sure there is public land around rock lake just north of Ewan.
