Moon shots

It seems like I already asked aobut his, but are there any great moon phorogrpahers out ther, or those with great moon photos?  Any handy hints how to take them in the dark so you don't get a bright flashlight look.  I know there are tricks and I don't know any.  DOes somebody know and have the time to share.

I have a hard time getting them not to blurr or be to bright. I try to take pictures of the moon all the time and they never seem to turn out. Here are a few that I took Halloween night. Not to bad.

Yeah, I love taking moon shots Bone.  They are easy if you know the settings.  You should have at least 800-1000mm or more of lens and you can use 2x and 1.4x converters because you are stopping down and the quality degradation doesn't show much.  With your 400mm f2.8 you could use a 2x and a 1.4x stacked and that would give you about 1100mm at f8.  If you stopped it down to f11 or f16 and put it on iso 400 at 1/125th you should be good.  You need to remember to keep your shutter speed at 1/125th or faster because the moon is moving and the movement will show if you get much slower.  Also, remember, your camera will want to overexpose the moon so you need to put it on manual and underexpose by 2 or 3 stops.  Look at the screen and see if you got it right and adjust accordingly.  Try it out!

Shawn, correct me if I'm wrong, but from the angle of the moon and the depth of the crater on the right side, it appears to me that you might have been standing in Oregon or real close to the Oregon-Washington border.  Had a good time this weekend, can't wait to see some of your pics.  Brute says to tell you he wants a cribbage rematch.

Really cool pic's and I have the same night time problem, but now I have a new digital that takes night photo's, now to learn how to use it

I like shooting in the evening when the moon is just rising and the sun is setting, usually around the 1st week of the month.
Here's mine from 2 months ago. Sorry, no Mountains.

Very hard to do with a point and shoot unless there is alot of other light in the sky.  The moon is a full sunlight object and takes a camera that you can manually set your cameras settings on.  You will need daylight settings like Pope used on his shot.  Even without the super telephoto you can still get moon detail but will loose forground detail.  Set up using a tripod and bracket your shots. Take a lot of shots at different settings, write down what you do and after a few attempts you will have it figured out.  It is not hard and it is a lot of fun
