Make sure you set your traps up off the ground in case you have skunks in the area, they won't climb to go into the trap.  Hang a couple of marshmellows from a wire over your pan, sardines in oil is a killer bait that coons have a hard time resisting.  If you think your dealing with a trap wise coon, you can do a couple of things, put your trap in a large garbage bin or get one of the bucket kits from the snare shop, lots of trap wise coons have met their match with those traps and they only run about $25 at the snare shop.

Is there anything that will attract coons but not cats?  I've been trying to trap a big ass coon that's been wandering through my yard, but I keep getting neighbors cats instead, because I was using dog food in the trap.  I'm guessing marshmellows might not be cat attractants?

When I trap in town I use nothing but Vanilla Wafers, not the cheap kind but the good ones, 99% of the cats will leave them alone, but the skunks and coons love them.  If you do catch the occasional cat, after you release them they won't go back in a second time.  Vanilla Wafers have caught 40 skunks a summer and probably 60 coons.  They work great.

What I like to avoid cats and attract coons is peanut butter and jelly with a dash of anise oil. Use the marshmellows too.

Trap is set....can of sardines in oil and a giant marshmallow. Now I'll wait and see what happens.
