Mt Spokane Moose with pics - and a long story!
« on: October 21, 2010, 09:16:27 PM »
Well my bull moose adventure came to an end this Sunday afternoon.  This was the second weekend of the hunt.  The first weekend I had my buddies with me and one day we were even joined by a great guy from the forum.  We hunted hard from sun up to sun down for three days.  It was a tough time - fog and rain.  We saw only one small bull and a cow/calf.  Despite expert calling (on Saturday at least) no bulls to be found.

This last weekend saw me and Matthew making the drive back to Spokane.  We got there late Friday night.  We had some good recon and headed to a closed road to walk.  There were really good number of moose tracks - but on a 6 mile round trip and staying in till 2 in the afternoon - not one moose.  We decided to head back to the IEP land with the idea of walking some quad trails.  Well I took a wrong turn and ended up in Green Bluffs in the middle of the Pumpkin event.  Holey crap - talk about a traffic jam... BUT everything happens for a reason.  I did get to walk a trail the last 2 hours of the afternoon and found where a good bull had been hooking some brush.  By now I was getting a little worried.  This was a tough hunt.

We set a plan for Sunday to head up a trail to Quartz Mt.  On the way in we saw a basket head bull and passed.  By the time we got to the trail someone else was already there.  So I decided to go back to the trail where I had been the night before.  On the way in we ran into guys on quads.  We talked to them and they said a nice bull lived on this trail.  They described the place as a bog by two Kelly humps in the trail.  As they left Matthew said that this was the same place as two local boys had told him about the weekend before where a nice bull lived.  We were now getting this moose thing figured out.
We found the bog.  This was a moose bedroom! Matthew said it had to be a dominate bull to own this real estate.   Matthew had a plan and I liked it.  He said that when it get hot the bull would come back to get in the mud.  The plan was to sit and wait.  But it was cold in the bog so I said lets wait on the quad trail. It wasnow about 3 in the afternoon. We had just climbed onto the trail when the bull came out of the timber walking to his bog.

Now those that know me would understand... but I missed the first two shots.  The bull stepped where I could see just his back end.  I thought knock his back legs out from under him.  It worked the third shot saw him buckle.  We ran down the trail where we could see him, the fourth shot was perfect and he piled up.  Right next to the quad trail.  The only thing about that is I do not own a quad.  I had set my expectations for a decent bull with OK width nice palms  and a few points good overall character.  When we got up to him I was totally satisfied.  He later taped at 43".

We quarted and hung the meat in game bags and got the head back to the truck about 7 that night.  We borrowed a quad and came back to haul the meat out.

This was a great hunt and adventure.  I had a great time with my buddies.  I met a lot of great people.  The best part was to have my son share in another lifetime memory.  Also I want to say thanks to Brian, hope we get to hunt together again some time, you taught me a lot.
So here are the pics:  The first couple are the first weekend - calling and glassing for moose...

I would have never thought to take out the back end as a first option.  :bdid:
Can we say wait for a clean shot to make a quick kill.

Cool bull!  That one point is pretty neat.

I got one a few years ago and had to go buy a second freezer - I have two of the danged things in my garage.  Something like 450 pounds of meat came off of it.
