SCI, B&C, P&Y, etc.
« on: October 12, 2010, 11:19:18 AM »
Can anyone please refer me to a website that explains the basic differences between Pope & Young, Boon & Crocket, and Safari Club International? I know all scoring systems are different and I think that B&C is the most popular, but just trying to learn some basics about the differences of opinion and scoring methodologies. I think I've read that SCI allows for high fence/canned hunts but not sure of that.

sci has different categories for animals in "estates" what we call fenced, but they are not lumped in with free range animals. I think their scoring system is more fair though, it is the same as others just without the deductions for symmetry. They do ask for a lot of money and a membership for book entries, which is why I wouldnt use them, seems like they are just after money.

There's a bit more to it than this guys  :chuckle:

If you're interested in learning about the history of these organizations, I recommend visiting their sites to read up on them.  For practical purposes, the Boone & Crockett Club keeps records for rifle-killed big game.  The Pope and Young Club is all about bow and arrow.  Pope and Young Club adopted the B&C measuring system so in terms of score, they are done exactly the same way.  The minimum entry scores differ between the two organizations to reflect the close-range method of hunting done with a bow (P&Y).  The system is based upon measure animals against a "perfect" specimen, so abnormal points are tallied as deductions against the final score.  When you hear "gross score" vs. "net score" this is why, but both clubs don't acknowledge a "gross score"; only the final net score.

The National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association also maintains records for black powder hunters and utilizes the B&C system.

SCI has a very different scoring system from B&C/P&Y, whereby they don't penalize antlers with deductions - they count everything, so you can't compare an SCI score with any other point of reference.

NW Big Game, Inc. is the record keeping organization for OR, WA, ID, and MT.  They also utilize the B&C system.

This is very high-level but I hope it helps.
