Eastside Hunt and at Home...
« on: October 22, 2010, 01:08:00 PM »
Got back last night.  Two of the gang are still out there in unit 133.  I filled my doe tag Sunday on public land after climbing up to the narrow side of the public unit.  I watched six does and fawns at about 100 yards that looked like they wee going to come through the trees right below me.  After about 40 minutes, another doe came down from above them and I realized they were not coming toward me but were just feeding.  I had to crawl across the hill about 50 yards before I could get an angle on her, she spotted me and turned toward me giving me the shot.  I hit a little high but she tumbled about 50 yards down the hill before stopping after breaking off a little pine tree.

Driving back saw four cougar cubs cross the road and then up the hill was momma.  We saw cat sign all over the place, maybe explains why we saw no deer near the L. Roos. Rec. Area.  Moved over to some private land on Tuesday.  We saw lots of deer but no legal bucks in range or during shooting light.  Hopefully Chuck or Bill can add to the story when they get to a computer, as they had an extra day to hunt after me.  The running deer pic is one that I spotted bedded down and snuck up on to about 25 yards.  I knew there was a doe with him but was hoping there might be a legal buck I could not see in the grass.  When they stood up, no shooter...   :(  This pic was a pretty common sight when we did see them.

Also found a bunch of mushrooms which I thought were Boletes but was not positive.  I didn't pic any but know where they will be next year.  Does anyone know which variety of Bolete this is?

Thank you to the member that helped get us into his hunting area.  HUNT-WA and its members rock!

Congrats on the doe, she looks pretty good sized.  Too bad the big kitty had little baby kitties with it or you could have filled your kitty tag.

Getting a photo of the cougar was pretty cool, would have loved to pull the trigger on her....

So I pulled out Weathergirl's Mossberg just in case a nice buck wandered through the yard today while I was cutting up my doe.  I went out to feed the chickens and heard a deer in the brush.  This is the area that I often see bucks when the rut is on.  So, I ran into the house, grabbed the 20 ga., and went out along the driveway.  I heard something close in the brush, but it turned out to be a towhee.  Then I heard the deer back behind the coop so I snuck around by the shop and saw antlers moving through the grass.  I stepped up on the shop step and stopped him right there.  Not the biggest buck we have gotten out here but only the second with brow tines and he even had the start of a third point on one side.

The buck was definitely rutted up and following a doe.

Kind of nice of this buck to step up and help me out,  I just found out I have to work A LOT next week and wouldn't have time to get out in the brush.     8)

I didn't even know this one....   :chuckle:  Haven't wasted a single apple on him.
