Bear Down from the hip at 10'
« on: October 22, 2010, 09:24:25 PM »
Went out this evening for a late bear hunt.  Brought my oldest boy out and my buddy Jeremy brought his son.  The packed there guns and wore there hunter orange, and were fairly quite, they did good for both being under 3 years old.  We spotted this bear across the canyon we opted for the boys to stay with Jeremy while I got closer for a better look, about 20 minutes later I was down were we had seen him but he was gone.  I eased up the creek drainage listening and glassing, i fiqured the bear must have slipped away silently.  Before I new it the brush broke loose about 10feet from me, I lifted my gun to my hip and let the black fuzz ball have a Barnes TSX 160 grain bullet!!  I dont know whether he was charging me or fleeing, after the first shot he kind of hung up in the brush at about 15feet and then next thing I know hes on the run down the hill, I threw up off my hip again swang and shot all in one motion and hit him again, he expired right there at my feet less than 15 yards away.  It was pretty intense to say the least, this was my closest encounter but about the 5th that I have taken at 50 yards or less!!  Bear number 14 down for me and my soon to be 3year old got to be there and experience it!!!  Pretty awesome evening, now Ive got to get back in there in the morning and pack him out.

Congrats on your bear.

Wow! Looks like a good size bear, and can't beat the excitement of shooting it at 10 feet! I don't know how you did it with your kids though. My girls will never be quiet enough for me to take them hunting. Maybe that's the difference between boys and girls.

Dude, you must have a couple of good spots. You are always finding bears.
I don't know how you do it. I'm out all the time and hardly ever see anything.

Corey, this is actually the first bear that Ive killed since fall of 08, last year just didnt have time, this year backpacked in to early in August didnt see anything, and this bear I hit it just right, but definetly do get lucky as well!!!  You need to come over here and get up with your brother and hunt in some of the areas he has access to, you should be able to find some pigs up there!!
