You just came up out of a bottom of a draw and you are huffing and puffing. You are either bowhunting, muzzel or rifle, and you spot this guy. You range it 150 yards. Its late in the general season and the rut is beginning to show a bit. There are three does with him. You are skylighted on the ridge. No trees around for a rest. This is a general season hunt but no other hunters have been noted, though this is a popular area. It is 1005 in the morning but heavily overcast and is threatening rain or snow. 32degrees with wind in your face about 5-10 mph.

i'd get my pack off, go prone, rest rifle on pack and wait for a good shot, then shoot if i wasn't too thrown off by the huffing and puffing. (rifle)

comfortable only to about 100 yds w/ my front loader i hunker down and wait to see what happens.in my book definately a shooter

Ide lie down and try to crawl a bit so that i have a good shot with nothing in my way and then i would take a look at the deer for a while...He is turned and looks like he is comming closer so i have plenty of time at 150 yards to slow my breathing and collect my self before i would ever need to take a shot....

150 yards, NO SWEET

Wait, calm down, review the deer and situation, and if i think its all good, BOOM! Gut and bag.

Im deffinantly not taking a shot while he is turned like he is though. He will either turn up or go down presenting a good shot. Not much cover where he is at so a shot will present its self...

(Using my rifle) I would approach this the same way as jackelope. Uuse my pack for a rest, take a prone position, relax to try and catch my breath! Wait for the buck to turn and close the deal! This guy would be a shooter for me for sure.

Well since we are out of breath I would stop and try to analyze this buck as much as i could. It will be hard because i am hot and my binos will be fogging at this point. Then i will put my pack down and analyze through the scope. I would notice that this buck has good mass with shallow forks looks to have some decent width. I would also think this is a mature buck and i am hunting general season in washington state. Once he decided that he wanted to move up or dawn hill and present me with a good shot. BOOM.

You get your breathe and your glasses are fogging. He starts to move ahead, apparantly still unaware of you. His attention is on the does in front of them. They have you pinned.

You put your binos down and the movement is enough to scare them. thump thump thump dow the draw they go and over the edge of the hill.

He'll turn. Just wait. 150 yds = no chance in hell with a bow.

Off of a skyline though if you move too suddenly he might catch your movement. Move slow if you can get into the prone for a shot off your pack.

With a storm coming and him interested in does he will not bed in the next draw. The does will be feeding in a frenzy preparing for the bad wether. After he bounds off i will give him some time to forget about me. Go up the ridge and try to get over the top of the deer preferably down wind of them if possible. Shadow the deer until he presents me with another shot. I will not directly follow him because deer always watch there back. But mule deer sometimes have the tendency to not look up unless something makes a racket.

Does are gone and he has no clue why. Its now approaching 10:30. He grabs a bite then cuddles up under that big sage brush beds and stares right at you, Looking right through you, but relaxed nd chewing his cud with his ears back Listening behind him. He is still at about 150. All the other conditions are the same.

By this time I should have caught my breath. As he turns his head to the side, not looking at me anymore, set up the Bi-pod... Definitely a shooter for my .270.... Aim the shot, and squeeze the trigger. A one shot wonder! Now the work begins.

I'm generally pretty grounded until I drop the animal. Then I get a bit excited for a few. Mray takes a drink. I sit there and fondle antlers. That usually calms me down enough to play with sharp objects.

Good backdrop, has not spotted me, clear shot, He would have been dead at 10:05 and 5 seconds. Breathing can weight, at 150 yards singlewrap the sling and drop that bad boy. Worry about catching my breath after the buck fever adrenalin rush goes away.

I'm kind of with you. An older gentleman on here once taught me to stop before the crest of a hill to get your breath before you go over the top. I would have taken him off hand. I'm trying to teach that same older fellow to quit dinking with rests and things and just get the job done, I know he is very capable.

I would have shot him off hand at that distance 3 seconds after spotting him. I don't see any problem with it. There is enough time for follow up shots if necessary. Backstrap with ketchup that night...and beer.

Bone, I'm with you as well, my old man also taught me to slow down and catch my breath before going over a hill, with a rifle I'd have shot that deer off hand and already be done gutting him by the 10:30 picture rolled around. With a bow, I would have never sky lined myself to begin with and I'd be able to get back down over the hill and get around and stalk him from behind while he lies in his bed.

Bow would have been tough on this guy. Circling him would have been easy on top, but that would have put the wind right at him. This particalr spot, you might have gone way above and figured the wind would blow your scent over the top of him and came in quarter, about where the does disappeared and hoped the wind would catch before getting to him, and used the big sage as cover to get close. This would have definately been a challenge with a bow. Another if you were patient is to poistion yourself over on that side about twhere the does went and wait, and hope he was enough in the rut to decide to follow, before dark. That would ahve been hard on me though. I'm patient, but on public land thats really stressful.

Sorry, but I have been eating it that way for over 30 years and I don't think I can stop. Don't slam too hard, but I even have to put a tiny bit of ketchup on prime rib.

The only thing that is fit to eat with BBQ sauce is ribs and yard bird. But i dont even like to eat yardbird son that only leaves one thing for me. Venison is only good in pepper sticks anyway.

Oh wow. You and I just don't see eye to eye on stuff Red Dawg. I guess I don't disagree they are good in sticks...but venison is good in many other ways. I make burger with beef fat that my Bellevue wife likes... My jerky is good. Any dipped and fried backstrap...mmm. I must admit I eat 80% burger and 15% steaks and 5% jerky though.

That is my favorite way to eat it. i do like backstrap and burger mixed with beef fat also but my wife wont eat anything that is wild game so it is just easier to make pepper sticks for me while i am enjoying the outer doors. I happened to agree with you on many things.

I turn most of my deer NOT THE BACKSTRAPS into peppersticks too. Mostly because I'm one of those snob *censored*s that has several freezers full of moose and elk. Deer just doesn't compare. I have Nile Meats do mine in Naches. They really ripped me off the first year. I went back the second year and they were kind of growly at me because I ground my own. I didn't get ripped off this time. Their sticks were awesome, bu tstill not real happy about getting ripped off.

Finding a really good butcher is priceless.........I had one "Loose" my deer.............about a month later he calls me and tells me that he just found it..................I swear to god he just went and killed one in his back yard........I dropped off a nasty buck and and got back a doe

Hornseeker and I did that in E-burg. We took in two deer and got back an elk. I suppose we should have spoke up, but our deer was gone, so we took the elk. I assume the guy that brought in the elk got back two deer.

Sling my pack down for a rest, give thanks for skipping the coffee and taking a full dose of my insulin replacement (it keeps the shakes away) get my breathing under control and hope he turns to give a good shot.

Then try not to hurt myself packing him out
