Our first double!
« on: October 25, 2010, 11:06:52 AM »
For the past 8 years i have been hunting with my grandpa, and yesterday was a first for us. We both shot bucks on the same day with in an hour of one another. Actually we have never both killed a deer in the same year. So we were pumped. There wasn't much of a story, It was foggy and poured rain saturaday so we figured if the fog cleared in the morning we should be able to find some deer moving. My grandpa is over 65 and we were in GMU 124 so he could have shot a doe so that was the plan. To find a buck for me and a barren doe for him. So sunday morning we woke up before daylight made some coffee and took off. We had seen some buck tracks consistantly up high, so thats where we headed. We hopped in the ranger and took off up the mountain. We got up to the spot and didnt find anything so we took off to another spot. On our way there i spotted a deer moving above the road so i jumped out and spotted antlers, I threw up my Ruger .243 waited for him to stop and let him have it. I went up and found him, i had spined him so i put another one in his neck, done deal.
I gutted my deer put him in the back of the ranger and took off to find grandpa a doe.  Not a mile down the road i spotted a little basket 4x4 bedded on a side hill. he stood up and took of, my grandpa whistled, the deer stopped and granpa dumped him right there. Got him high in the lungs and clipped the spine. We were both shooting my 85 TSX handloads. Those little bullets did a hell of a job on both of these deer. Neither of the deer are monsters but we could't be happier.
