The way I was shown (and it could be wrong or it could be method 32 of 342) is to take your arrow and gently flex it.  Look on the outside of the "flex" for cracks and splits.  Rotate the arrow some and repeat. If there's any question on "is that a crack or not" then ditch the arrow.  Getting rid of a $60 arrow beats a several thousand dollar ER trip.

almost did that when I was younger, pulled back too aggressively (on a compound that was too heavy for me) the arrow came off the wire rest and got caught in my jacket as I was trying to pull it back, as I gave up it punched a hole through the sleeve.

I have seen this picture or another just like it and that was the case.  The carbon arrow exploded on release and the back half of the arrow went right into the hand or forearm.  Leaves an absolutely nasty wound with carbon fibers stuck all over in it.  Always check your carbons prior to shooting, especially your practice arrows.  One of the main reasons I switched to Full Metal Jackets.

Full metal jackets wont help ya sorry! Still need to check em. My buddy had the same thing happen to him with full metals and it went all thru his wrist and hand.  Easton sent him 2 dozen arrows with braodheads and a case for free. He still has carbon splinters in his hand and it happened 2 years ago. the arrow exploded upon release and it wasnt pretty. Cheap arrows or expensive arrows you still need to flex the shaft and make it a habit.

I pulled a number out my wazzu.  Sounded good when I wrote it but now it seems ridiculous.  Though it sure feels like it's that much when you buy a dozen and get them set up (cut, ferruls, fletching).

Got a good story like this....down elk hunting Naselle, 20+ years ago, you know when everyone was shooting 90lbs with overdraws to get good speed. I was shooting my High Country Sniper at 98#, with 2413 cut way down and Rocky Mt Broadheads. We had been chasing this herd all day, I was in some big timber and was taking a break. I heard some noise down the ridge from me where I had just came from, I climbed up on a big downed log and looked down towards the racket. Here comes a huge 5x5 walking up the ridge towards me at about 150 yards. I nock an arrow and wait...and wait...and wait till he's about 30 yards and goes behing a huge fir tree. I yank back my bow and wait for him to step out, the only thing that pops out is his head and he stops and looks in the other direction..WTF I'm thinking...He stands there and stands there, I start to shake and think about what to do. I decide to let down since he's looking the other way, here's where things get dicy.... some of you probably remember when our releases just sat under our nocks and sometimes your arrow would fall off the rest when letting down. I had done this 100X's before, let halfway down and put my finger on the arrow to hold it there to keep it from falling. But in the heat of the moment, my finger went straight up to grab the arrow, (remember short arrow & 98#) I let the bow down and the arrow fell off the rest, I felt a sharp pain in my left hand and looked down in horror to see me left pointer finger hanging there and the 2nd finger cut across the top....  UT Oh!  I look at the bull who is now watching me and try to put the arrow back on and pull back, as blood poors out my hanging finger... needless to say he runs off with me sitting there wondering what just happened.... I take the pocket off my camo pants and get out some surveyors tape and try to mend it. And decide I'd better hike out. To make a long story short, we go to Naselle and the clinic is closed, they tell us to go to the Drs House.. we do, he won't touch it and sends us to Ilwaco to the Clinic, where the sew the back together and splint my hand... Yep them broadheads are sharp....

OH, and they did a crappy job at the Drs and my pointer finger on my left hand is sewed on crooked and has a cork screw look to it!

I have heard of this happening, but had never seen a pic good lesson for my 9yr old son staring at the screen here.  I always tell him to check his practice arrows for crackc, or splinters now I think both of us will be checking out our arrows allot more closely.
