Montana Deer Hunt

As most of you know, I went to Montana earlier this year for a combo deer/elk hunt. I was able to fill my elk tag but not my deer. I wasn't planning on going back to try and fill it because I had already taken alot of my vacation time. I was just looking at the regs and it APPEARS that the season is open until the Sunday after Thanksgiving...? I am reading online and am a bit confused because all it gives is a "general" season date. Maybe the complexity of Washington regs has warped my brain and I can't understand the simple ones.    My two questions are, 1) are there different seasons depending on the unit/area? 2) anybody have any general areas that I could do some research on to maybe try and fill my tag. I am not looking for a wall hanger or anything, just something to fill the freezer.   Thanks!!

Your deer tag is good for a vast majority of the state through Sunday after Thanksgiving. There are a few areas that are permit only for muledeer or close early for muledeer. How far into Montana are you willing to go?

If it is open through the Sunday after Turkey day then I will go as far as needed. I could probably get the Wednesday off before Thanksgiving, use that as a driving day and then hunt Thurs-Sun. Any info, even just general areas, would be awesome. I would be willing to share any info I have as far as deer, elk or duck hunting spots in Washington.

Our group is heading to Montana in middle November.    We got 2 party tags drawn this year for the combo deer/elk tag.  We leave the 10th and get home sometime around the 20th.  This is my first trip over there and I am excited.  Got my first buck this season here in WA, so I'm looking to make it 2 for 2 on the year, possibly 3 for 3 if I get an elk as well.  Good luck on your hunt!

You need to check the regs for each unit you might be hunting in. Some units have shorter seasons than others, for example the unit I usually go to 400, ends on the 15th of november ( or something close to that). However, most units go until late november, you still need to check the regs to be sure.

I will verify the dates for sure once I decide on an area to go. I am trying to contact some people I know that live in Montana to see if they can lead me in the right direction.

if you want a spot i went to in 2001 take aleft at saintregs about 20 miles down the pass on I 90.go abut 3 to 4 miles . take a left up tamarack creek rd. take the 3rd road to the right go up and hunt behind the gates. Itook a 24 inch 5x5 in 2001  seen about 10 to 15 bucks a day. you dont have to travel across state.

yoderhunter is on to something off Tamarack Creek Road.  Especially if you have weather.  St. Regis is just a bit over 100 miles from Spokane and there are places to stay in St. Regis.  Thats what I would be doing.

I would agree with what has been said before good, whitetail area's around St regis as well as some good muley hunting up higher, or if the weather pushes them down as well.  You could also head across hiway 2 and cross the state line and start hunting any of the FS roads.  You could also turn and go up the Yaak river road, there is some private ground in there as well.  If you go up the Yaak, I wouldn't bother stopping at the Dirty Shame and asking for any advice.  Good mule deer up high and good whiteys as well.

didn't put a tape to it, but me and 3 other guys got turned around at about 4000' today and after pushing snow with our bumpers. The top of Big Mountain (6800') has 30" of snow. As said befor, most areas are open till the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Just check the area you'll be in for ending date, and Whitetail/Mule Deer antler restrictions (if any).
