Last time I hunted Ft. Lewis (gads, it has been almost 2 decades!)....at that time there were one or two a year taken.

Yes, there are bears on JBLM.  Yes, there are some out between range 15 and highway 507...

Good luck.
Of sorrow and sickness I've known on my way,
But I'm old and I'm nervis,
I'm cast from the Service,
And all I deserve is a shillin' a day.

Ive hunted the base for 15 years .I never saw a bear until last year.I was kinda shocked but we ended up seeing 3 in 09.This year just since Sept 1st Ive seen 5 all to far for a bow shot and there movin out. I dont really hunt bears but Ill shoot one if its close. All the bears ive seen this year have been on area 3 , Its a good time right now because there down by the salmon hatchery and make there way up the hill in the morning. Also every bear has been very close to water.Hope this helps you pm me if you need any more base info. Greg  go to youtube and look up gregs bear he was on area 10 just across the swamp from the small arms impact area(range 23 I believe)

there are ton of bears on lewis and mcchord. ive talked with the forestry people who set trail cam's out and they told me they got pics of quite a few monsters. lots of sign this year but so far not as many sightings as previous years. ta9 or ta 7 are good spots.

Saw a large bear this last spring outside of east gate.  look pretty big to me.  i was in my truck and he barreled across the road.  he was so surprise to see the truck that he tripped in the ditch and just lay there staring at me as if to say, "well ain't you gonna help me up?"  true story.

There are definately bear on Fort Lewis.  I saw plenty of sign this weekend and our hunting buddy saw one on the river Saturday. I've seen one cross the road in front of 4 chaplains chapel near Madigan.  MP's were there stopping traffic for him.  Quite a funny sight.
