Kittitas Valley waterfowl
« on: October 27, 2010, 08:47:11 AM »
The birds really don't seem to be flying like normal! Is it the warm weather? I am seeing some geese but hardly any ducks. Just some local ducks. Usually the canals are packed with them... Any ideas? Anyone noticing the lack of waterfowl?

I don't really think it has been cold enough, or cold long enough for that matter to really bring any northerns down. I think what you see are all resident ducks and geese so far.

private land on the N. side of town, my watchdog at the airport sees them every night and morning, finally pinned them down smack dab in the middle of coastie tree hugger land. They almost laughed at me when I asked to shoot their precious pets.....  :bash:

Ya, there are little ponds scattered all over the north side of the valley but they are all private land. I actually got up on some geese yesterday but missed. I was using a gun that I have never shot steel through and never shot at waterfowl and it only has one choke with it.... Monday I will be getting my brand new browning cynergy. I will be able to tweak different loads/chokes and be ready for any bird then.

The Weather sucks but Ellensburg is not a GREAT place for duck hunting anyways. You won't find a high volume of birds like in the potholes or on the coast.

Get your float tube, couple bags of decoys and head out to the pond down the street from the Thorp fruit stand. Used to have fun out there. Nobody ever bothered me-

It is illegal to hunt there now. I was told the same thing and almost got in big trouble when I went out there. I believe is it owned by CWU. IF you do go out there. Good luck.

I guess I'm not a good source of current info over there :chuckle: when the park washed out in the flood I used to go back into little pockets and pools in there and jump shoot. Set up on the pond and shoot. Guess not a good idea anymore? When it first washed out it was the best fishing I'd ever had in the Yakima. The fish all moved into all the new channels and streams- anyways- good ole days i guess?
