Johnny House
« on: October 28, 2010, 09:13:26 AM »
I posted this on craigslist, see if I get any offers:  :)

"Howdy farmers and land owners. I'm looking to lease or use a few acres of quail type habitat. The upland bird numbers are way down this year so I'd like to see if you have a spot I can put a Johnny House up for 20-25 quail. Preferably in a area a few acres big that I can work my pointing pup. If your not familiar with a Johnny House it is wooden house that is 4 foot by 4 foot by 8 foot high and houses 20-25 quail. The quail are fed and watered inside the house and are able to get flight conditioned going up and down to the upper perch. Once the quail have been together for several days a few can be released and you leave a few in the house. Once you work your dog and leave, the quail in the house recall the quail outside of the house. The quail outside the house then come back and re-enter the house through a one way funnel. The house protects them from predators and harsh weather and you always have birds for your pup to point and work. I would be happy to show you any photos of Johnny Houses so you could see how they work. If you have a few acres that sounds like this would work and you'd be willing to lease or allow me to put the Johnny House up, that would be great and with the understanding at anytime you want it removed, I will remove it right away. Thanks for considering this, you can contact me at......"

:)  Judging by all the responses to this and my other thread, I take it Johnny Houses and Recall Pens are not quite as popular here in the NW as they are in the midwest and south.   :chuckle:

Good luck. I have not had much success with recalling but I was using a barrel. Let us know how it goes.

How close to you do you want? I have some property in spirit lake if you are interested. I would have to talk to my wife but would imagine there would not be a problem. Let me know.

Will do. I have used them with really good results in Missouri.  What type of quail were you using in the barrel?  I have heard the results tend to be better with the Johnny Houses than with the protable recall pens.
