Taking my 8 year old after his first elk
« on: October 28, 2010, 12:42:44 PM »
He got his first deer earlier this year and he wants an elk now.  I don't even have an elk tag for modern firearm.  this is his hunt.  Now, I have a decision to make.  I am looking at Coweeman 550 or Lewis River 560.  Are either of these going to be a war zone?  Are they good places for success?  we areen't looking to camp.  just weekend hunts.  Any tips on either GMU or another I should be looking at?

Hunters ed is not limited to age, just ability.

I think both units will be heavily hunted but you will be able to get away from the road hunters if you head up onto Mt St Helens north of Cougar in the Lewis unit. Head up the Blue Lake trail and try to make it to Sheeps canyon.  There are a lot of elk taken in that area but also a lot of hunters.  Good for you getting your kid into hunting at an early age.  I have been contemplating whether or not to take my 5 yr old daughter along turkey hunting this spring.  Good luck!  Hope he gets one.
