Getting sick and tired of trappers selling furs that have been harvested under a permit.  They are making some serious money.

The only thing that is going to bring $200 to $300 is bobcat from the eastside. How many special permits are written for bobcat? Not very damn many if any. Most permits are written for beaver. Beaver won't average $20 under the most rosy scenario. Yea, a lot of money to be made there.

no where did i indicate that this was a single pelt sale but 30-40 beaver and a dozen or so muskrats easily make 200-300 dollars. it is happening and could easily undermine efforts to address I-713.

Can you sell muskrats caught in a colony trap even if they were trapped under a permit?  I thought you just couldnt sell them if they were caught in a body gripping trap.

Nothing illegal about selling animal furs caught with body gripping traps under a permit.  They cannot be "RAW" pelts, but there is nothing illegal about selling tanned hides, even those caught using body gripping traps with a nuisance permit or colony traps or box traps under a permit.

(2) It is unlawful to knowingly buy, sell, barter, or otherwise exchange, or offer to buy, sell, barter, or otherwise exchange the raw fur of a mammal or a mammal that has been trapped in this state with a steel-jawed leghold trap or any other body-gripping trap, whether or not pursuant to permit.

thats true,I was not thinking about tanned hides,just dried and sold

I looked it up and it looks like its illegal for body gripping traps.  And in my NWCO handbook it says

The sale, trade, barter, giving away or retention of any wildlife taken under authority of the NWCO permit is prohibited except as otherwise provided.

It doesnt say anything about pelts.  I think this is just talking about live animals.  I couldnt find where this is online or the law for it though.

The Fish and Wildlife Commission adopted new rules related to retention and ownership of wildlife taken under the authority of a NWCO permit in June. It took effect in July. There is no such beast as a NWCO permit now. Renamed WCO permit. Furbearers and unclassified wildlife now become the property of the property owner on whose property they were taken. The property owner can give them away to you and you can do what you want with them. This does not give you the authority to sell furs trapped with traps authorized with a special permit until they have been processed.

Very confusing situation at the moment though. Dave Ware took the proposed changes to the Fish and Wildlife Commission and they passed them however they forgot or neglected to repeal the old rules so currently they are both on the books and are somewhat contradictory. They are enforcing the new rules though but with leeway if some violation was to come up. Not likely as I see it as the new rules are more lenient. Sean said he would send out an explanation to all WCOs but he has not done it as of yet.

A colony trap set would not be under a permit. The permits only cover bodygripping traps which they are not.
You would have to have a WCO permit to set the colony traps outside season but not a special permit to set bodygripping traps.
