HELP !!!! Remington 11-87 needs repair
« on: November 05, 2010, 12:20:21 PM »
Looking for a gunsmith that can repair my Remington 11-87 Super Mag. From what I can gather the problem may be a broken Feed Latch in the action. The gun will not pick up the 2nd or 3rd shot from the magazine.

I am in the Renton area, but that doesn't matter I just need the gun fixed. Was hoping not to have to return it to the factory if possible.

Are you sure that is what is wrong with it? Does the action stay open or does it close after you shoot? Is it clean? Sometimes the gas port can be plugged and it will result in it being a single shot. Also it could be the O ring. If the action stays open it is probally the O ring or gas port.

Yes, the action stays open and the next round stays in the mag and doesn't come up. Last weekend it was doing it from time time on Saturday and then on Sunday stopped shooting the 2nd shot period, but YES the action does stay open.

You may have a different problem but here is my experience with them.

When mine gets dirty from being in a goose pit or if it is too cold and it has any moisture inside (and freezes) it will only fire once and stay open. Sometimes it will not drop the next round out of the mag.

If I were you I would take it apart and totally clean it. The gas port is on the barrel inside the ring that goes around the magazine. I clean and oil my weapons regularly but sometimes the 11-87s and 1100s work better dry. For a big hunt I will break it completely down and clean and run all parts through boiling water so that there is no moisture and hunt with it dry with no oil. It always works when I do this.
I have to admit that more often than not I just grab my Wingmaster that always works and go huntin. I hope that you can figure it out. good luck.

If the round is not coming out of the mag, I would guess that it is an issue with a weak or broken spring.  The feed latch would only be a issue if the round was sitting on the carrier.  Have you pulled the magazine apart and checked the spring?  It could also be a gas issue but I am leaning towards a weak or broken magazine spring.  I'm an 870 guy and not a auto guy so take my thoughts with a big grain of salt.

Messed with it a little more this weekend. NOT a magazine spring problem, as I took that out to check it. When a round is in the mag tube, even if you manually pull open the action it will not release the round to chamber. Have to physically move the rail to get a shell out of the magazine tube. I too have always shot an 870 and starting to think I may want a pump gun again if this keeps up.

hmm ouch, carrier release or release spring?  Is the carrier under pressure from the release spring?  if not that might be the issue.  You might also pull the trigger group and check that the carrier lelease lever is not damaged.  Also check and see if the carrier release pin is not missing.  After that someone with more knowledge than I would need to check it out.

Take the trigger group out and bolt hose it down with gun scrub or carburetor cleaner. A lot of times when using aerosol spray oils they can change the un-burnt powder into cellulose membrane. This can cover parts without seeing it and it will jug up the entire works. I’ve seen this on 1100’s and SP-10 that I purchased because they did not function and got them cheap. Also check your gas ports, O rings and everything mentioned in the above suggestions.  :twocents:
