now this topic isnt about shot, or slugs... its about what kind of unconvential stuff you can shoot out of a shotgun

on the boat, we use shot shells called "shell crackers"... shoot em out, they fly 100 feet then explode... long distance seal-bomb shells...

what other cool shells are out there?

i had some fire cracker shells give to me. i have seen all kind of things in some of those crazy magazines. most i would never shoot threw any shotgun. lets start with the old stand by rock salt,chain chunk,steel dart,marbels,rubber bullets,bean bags,pepper powder, flame thrower shells + about 20 others i can't remember lol

I can't remember if it was my uncle or great uncle when they were teens use to pull the shot shells apart, remove the pellets and him and his brothers or cousins would shoot each other with the wadding.

Those "special" home defence rounds spell trouble in court if you used them in an attacker. I am not against them mind you, but I've seen & heard how the story gets twisted so, the defender is the bad person lying in wait for the poor dead thief with weird bullet wounds.

Stick with standard over the counter stuff nothing that resembles Mad Max and you might survive the court battle.

I heard stories that people used to take about 6ft of 40-50lb test fishing line and about every 6in clip a split shot then they would unfold the end on a shell and dump the pellets out then put the line with the split shots in the shell. They said you could kill a goose @ 100 yards with those. They also said that if you pulled the wad out and super-glued it so there were no slits and replaced it and then you could shoot 2 times as far.
I've also heard about cutting the shell on the outside just above the wad and shooting it that way. It fires the whole shell and when it hits its like a frag round.

Illegal as hell. One, lead is banned in migratory hunting. Two, string shot or bolo is banned in many states so better figure that one out before you get in trouble.

Bolo rounds are made of two or more slugs molded onto steel wire. When fired, the slugs separate, pulling the wire taut creating a flying blade, which could theoretically decapitate people and animals or amputate limbs. However, many active shotgun users consider this to be overstated, and view bolo shells as being less effective than conventional ammunition.  As opposed to the lethality of '00, lethal is lethal, dead is dead. If you want less than lethal stick to pointing your finger at the bad guy and yelling BANG. At close range they probably wouldn't spread enough for the wire to come into play anyhow.

  I got the point, yes it is illegal, but what got me was the reason stating due to it's lethality. Anything coming out of the end of a 12ga shotgun has the potential to be lethal even a non lethal rubber bullet. I have absolutely no desire to shoot a bolo round, and I can see why they would be illegal for goose hunting, but to ban it because it could decapitate or take off an arm, so can a well placed slug.

i highly doubt gluing the wad fingers will result in twice as far but it will hold a tighter pattern further

id be very very carefull shooting "cut shells" ,as we call them, watched a buddy banana an 11-87 barrel after shooting a cut shell, the crimp opened and the hull was left in the barrel (we figured cause the impact did not sound like a cut shell), he did not check the barrel and fired another cut shell, that barrel can now shoot around corners and in 3 directions.
