i am gonna be hunting elk and am gonna put a permit in for moose next year. what a could sabotted slug for rifled shotguns that wont mushroom. many slugs are designed for deer and they do. any suggestions for a mossberg 500 take 2 3/4 inches or 3 inch shells
thanks rock

Platinum Tip, Partition Gold, or AccuTip. 12 gauge 2 3/4" or 3" will work. Limit the range to 125 yards, and make sure you know from practice exactly where your shotgun will put them.

only 125 yards for accuracy reasons? hornady sst's shoot i've shot accuratly out to two hundred yards..= is it because those bullets are heavier?
would there be that much difference between 2 3/4 inch and 3" shells?
would they work well for bears like quarterin towards, frontal shots. sorry i have alot of questions just would like to know the limitations on certain loads

I've done a little with slugguns in the last several years. I have used the winchester 400 gr platinum tip 2 3/4 in out of a hastings 2 3/4 in barrell on a rem 1100. I wont ever shoot anything else. they mushroom out perfectly and are always on the inside of the hide on the other side of the animal. 2 nice blacktail bucks within 30 yds and a 5x5 bull at 139 yds and a 6x6 bull at 160 yds. I am totally confident in this combo. its worth a try for ya.

Shotgun slugs lose energy quickly. They have ballistic coefficients around .2. They start at 2000 ft/second or slower in most instances. By the time they get to 150 yards they've lost quite a bit of energy. Probably enough to kill a deer, but a large elk may be too much.
